I know this prolly gets covered often, but what free software do you recomend, all I need to do is split a video in two so I can burn it onto dvd. Any advice is appreciated, thanx.

VirtualDub will allow you to split you video where you like and it's free. DVD Shrink will allow you to make it to fit but i think it only works with MPEG-2 video, so you'll have to encode it first.

Any full length descent quality movie wont fit on a dvd.
is that not the point of DVD's? to hold full length movies?
The DVD's you buy from the store that already have movies on them are duel layer. Home DVD burners aren't capable of that, but I think they have been coming out with some new technology to fit more stuff on a dvd lately. Right now you can only hold about 4.7 gigs of data on a dvd. I've heard about more expensive dvd's that hold up to 8.

First, there is still one problem, while the new media holds twice as much data as current DVD±R/±RW disks, Professionaly made, pressed disks (i.e. comercial DVD-ROM, DVD-Video) can hold more data. Enough (up to 600 MB in some cases) to force you to cut parts, recode, or not copy.
Secondly, DVD stands for "Digital Versatile Disk." They weren't designed to hold video; they just happen to be a convinent storage medium that has standards for video storage. Like a garage, while they can and do hold cars, they also hold boats, lawn tractors, and other stuff.
