If it just needs cleaning then it can probably be fixed, if you dropped it out of a 3rd story window into a pit of lava...well then you migt just want to buy a new one.
just general wear, I've had it for probably 6 years and I really dont have any idea what's wrong, it's definately intact, and some things are working because sometimes it will work, but more often than not the picture wont hold or its really fuzzy.

Get a cheap computer and use an emulator. There are plans for controller interfaces if you want an authentic NES controller.

Ya sorry I didn't mean like a factory sealed new one, but saying accquire another console rather than repair the one he has. So to him it will be new, I guess. Sorry for the confusion.

Probably just needs cleaning.
http://www.atarihq.com/tsr/special/cleaning.html if that doesnt work, I know that sometimes the connectors on the console get worn and broken and need to be replaced. There is somewhere on the net where you can buy replacements, I just dont remember where it is.

Also, if you call the nintendo helpline, depending on the person you get and how good your communicating skills are, they'll send you a free replacement 72 pin connector. Not one of those 3rd party ones that crap out in 3 months either.
And yes, you can still get a factory sealed NES. But like everything factory sealed and old, it commands a high price. ~$200 or so
