What's the general consensus, do you guys like auto-aim / auto-target combat?
targeting Ex: Fable, Zelda 64,
aim Ex: cant think of a good one right now
or are there those hardcore gamers out there who think auto targeting is for weaklings?

It all depends on the game... most games that provide either auto-targeting or auto-aim do so because they don't provide the means for you to accurately do it yourself.
The first example of auto-aim that comes to my mind is Devil May Cry; it's a necessary thing here because making the player aim would require a big change in the overall style and gameplay in order to give the player the ability to be accurate. In this case I think they made the right decision.
When the gameplay allows for the player to aim manually, I usually would prefer that, however. The only example of this I can think of isn't really a very good one, but I always remember the auto-aim in Goldeneye. I understand why they included it; they didn't want to discourage the casual player by having a high learning curve. It always aggravated me somewhat, though. I didn't like to use it because I felt that if I was going to play the game, I was going to do it myself, damnit.
I guess that means I'm one of those harcore gamers that thinks auto-targeting is for weaklings... unless it's necessary to achieve the desired gameplay.
edit: Yes, I realize I split an infinitive or two, but it's allowed now. They officially changed it almost five years ago.
Halo has auto-aim on the xbox version, I think it would be a little better if you could take it off for experienced players but it would be really hard for a person new to the game.

Nothing was better than the auto aim on goldeneye007. That shit was amazing. You just had to be looking near someone and it would get them. But i usually play with auto aim off in most games if i can, cuz it just seems to be a smoother shot, and sometimes games will auto aim to a spot i would rather not hit. I agree with Heimdall, if i game has auto targeting then it will most likely be because it is extremely wasted to try and do it yourself

If we are talking about PC's, no one should need auto aim. Mouse and keyboard are the only things you need, and the exact feel of what you like can be acheived (in most decent games that is).
Console's I don't really know shit about, I don't play on them. The only console I ever got into was N64. Goldeneye's autoaim was the shit. It was helpful for everyone because of its consistency, and accuracy.

auto aim in goldeneye/PD was perfect, because you could switch between auto aim and manual aim on a dime as the situation called for. find yourself running backwards through a hallway with two guys chasing you? let auto aim spray fire down the hallway. once you get into an alcove whip out that R button aiming and take their heads off!
in fact i find that the R button aiming with the N64 controller was the best / most accurate i've used. the mouse/keyboard is definatly up there, but one of the great things about the N64 is that when you let go of the stick the crosshairs automatically center. unlike some games (halo, just about any other 3rd gen FPS for consoles) when you let go of the stick you stand there pointing up to the sky. this has its problems because i set my sensitivity on halo at like 7 so i can turn look up and down fast but it's hard to be accurate with it. instead with the N64 where you just pull the stick halfway back and you are looking at a guy's head. combine that with the 3x zoom of the K7 avenger and i'm unstoppable!!!!!

i loved perfect dark.
on the old 7N we'd play that all the time. we unlocked all the multiplayer challenges, every single one. we spent hours and hours on the one capture the briefcase near the end, with one guy lobbing rifle grenades at the briefcase constantly, one guy guarding that guy, and the other two trying to get the other case. crazy.
and playing co-op was sweet. i remember getting to the last level on perfect, and the parts where the skedar show up randomly... cloaked. we'd go back to back, slowly down the corridors, then piss ourselves when they spawned 3 inches from our face and then ran into the peripherial vision that's blacked out with the IR goggles.
and the final mp challenge, capture the hill with "perfect sims" who ran faster, aimed perfectly, could shoot and run in different directions, spawned with all the weapons, etc. the only reason we won that last challenge is because they ran so fast they couldn't stay in the stupid hill zone. dang, that whistle got annoying. TWEET TWEET TWEET TWEET TWEET every time they'd run out and back in.
i'd love to pick up a 64 with the ex pack, PD, and 4 controllers. but for some odd reason, the 64 still goes for a decent price, and PD is practically unavailable...

PD and Goldeneye were great games. I've come close to unlocking all the cheats in GE, but some of those time limits are just insane. Things like doing Facility in 2:05 on 00 Agent difficulty (for Invincibility) took me forever, and there's still some others that I have yet to do.
I really enjoyed doing glitchy stuff like the mixed double weapons (sniper rifle and shotgun at the same time ... w00t) or being a nasty bugger in remote mines, exploting a bug to make them invisible or float.
Anyone remember the paintbrush weapon?

yeah, you had to have the sniper rifle, and certain other guns, then cycle all the way through them forwards twice, then backwards once and end on the sniper rifle/unarmed which was the paintbrush instead of the butt end of the sniper rifle.

i had all of the goldeneye cheats unlocked except for the 2x RCP90 cheat, which involved beating the caverns level in x time. it was pretty useless considering i already had 2x every weapon cheat unlocked.
i remember doing the facility in 2:05. that was a bitch.
best gun though is the psychosis gun in PD. i don't remember what you had to do to unlock it (i think it might have been chicago on perfect agent in x time which was a pain in the ass) but then you get four shots to turn bad guys on your side!
i can't remember if i beat all the MP challenges or not... i know i got most of them done but god damn some of those challenges were tough as hell.
my multiplyaer game of choice though was 3 on 3 capture the case. me and my two competent friends vs. my incompetent friend and two hardsims. teams of 3 was perfect for capture the case.
we also had a game we played, four guys and 8 sims. each guy was on a team with 2 sims. and so for me i would put my sims on "protect" so they would follow me around like a posse. and then if joe pissed me off, i could command them "KILL el jefe" and they'd go hunt his ass down
every man for himself against dark peacesims. good luck getting a shot off in the time it takes you to draw a weapon and you are bitch slapped by 8 guys in white lab coats.

THE BEST GAME:
slow motion in felicity, 2-4 people on a team vs. 8 meat sims... the only gun is the tranquilizer. you have to hit them with a lethal injection to kill them, but they just blast the hell out of you with the tranquilizers... it takes forever to kill someone like that, and you're stoned into the ground. it's awesome.

the slow motion was cool at times, but at other times it would really drag the game along. i prefer 4 guys, 8 meatsims (or just 4 guys) everyman for himself with the intoxicating weapons: tranquilizers, crossbow and throwing knives. of course the obvious weapon of choice is the crossbow on instant kill, but there's no fun in that so everyone has it set on tranquilize. if you get hit with the combat knife in poison mode it will kill you and STILL take off health + drunk you up after you come back to life
and of course you played it in felicity. i think out of all the games we played, they were eitehr in felicity or the villa
