Playing the game how it's NOT meant to be played. Creating your own scenarios and hilarous moments when playing in a casual environment is where its at.
But alas, too many that I've played against are all too serious about the game and seek nothing more than the painfully apparent easiest way to win. Couple that with the speed at which the frequented weapons kill and horrible spawns, and you've got yourself a turky shoot or something simply too chaotic to enjoy.
I can probably guarantee that I won't agree with any other reason to like this game, so don't bother addressing me about it. I have seen the top of the mountain, and it is mediocre.

4 dudes running around sniping each other with pistols... i don't get it
co-op however is entertaining. shooting the little furbies is more comical than exciting.
perfect dark: zero (the sequel to the greatest FPS i have ever played) was supposed to be released in late 2004 for the nintendo gamecube. however, since microsoft purchased rare it sent the release date back. now it's possible the game won't even be released. and with the new consoles ont heir way out (oh boy! i can't wait to shell out another $300 even though i JUST BOUGHT my freaking gamecube not 5 years ago) it is definatly not going to be done in time for the current xbox console......
so even if the game is released it won't be for at least another couple of years. and then you have to think "why would microsoft release a game that would be competing with halo?" they probably won't.
(bitter)
anyway, lame weapon selection, lame story, lame enemies (the flood?!) poor level design (the library? 40 minutes of shooting flood enemies in identical looking corridors). and what's the deal with the lack of music? sure the theme is exciting when it kicks in -- at the beginning and end of each level. but what about when you are in the middle of a firefight? completely quiet! i personally am not a big fan of the dual-analog stick controls, i liked the R-button aiming on N64 way better... but it's not that bad
no no no dont listen to this darktoaster guy, he doesnt know what hes talking about beyond maybe an hour of total play in which he was raped by a less nubish player. the reason people are serious about this game is, apart from being a fun game, its actually competitive. why is it competitive? cause its not that easy to kill someone. if you are good enough to kill another chief in 3 shots from the pistol or 1 HEADSHOT with the sniper rifle, then you deserve that kill point. if you think the rocket is really gay for killing in one shot, then maybe you shouldnt let your opponent gain control of it, idiot. and if he does, then go into the other room and get the sniper rifle (T-h3). there can be alot of teamwork and strategy involved, just like any other multiplayer game, but you kinda have to be good at thinking to recognize it. halo can be chaotic too, if you play free for all with more than 4 players, but isnt chaos what a free for all really is? you can do alot of cool shit in halo and really the movement and aiming are superb for a non mouse game. the pistol, although not friendly to new players, is the heart and soul of the game. spray and pray sucks, actually aiming is where its at. as for the spawn killing, why dont you try shooting back? what a fooking clever oideya!!!
if you ask me, this dark toaster guy doesnt know anything about Halo at all. he hasnt been to the mountaintop of the game, he hasnt seen it from across blood gulch or on the internet, he hasnt even seen a fucking thing close to it and if he played against me in halo he would see nothing but the inside of a white line. domework, bitch ass. haw.
if you arent gonna be serious about a game at least a little bit then dont say anything about it at all. pwnd.

Damnit, why does everybody mistake me for an inextperienced n00b who only hates the game because he's not good at it? I may be a freshman and not own the game, but I've played a whole hell of a lot. At least a year and a half, if memory serves. That's been more than enough time for me to reach my conclusion.

No, a game is only competitive as it's players make it out to be. And it being hard to kill someone? Simply couldn't be further from the truth. Like I said, the freqented weapons kill with unnerving speed. Sniper rifle, Shotgun, Rocket, Pistol can all bring down an opponent fast enough that he/she hardly has time to react.
TheMexican wrote:

There you go again assuming I know nothing about this game. And simply not letting an opponent gain control of a weapon is all but impossible (unless you're some lame-ass spawn camper). Some of the maps are simply too big with the respawns far enough away from things like the rocket launcher that not even the most experienced player can keep an opponent from running off to go grab it after waiting to respawn.
TheMexican wrote:

Am I the only one who finds something inheriently wrong when a default weapon (especially a pistol) is made into the backbone of gameplay?
TheMexican wrote:

Coming from Counterstrike and many other HL mods, I know this all too well. Hell, it's not even hard to aim in this game with the apparent lack of recoil.
TheMexican wrote:

Gee whiz mista! I neva thoughta that! This turns my entire view on life and halo around! yeah.... no. There's times when you simply cannot shoot back.

Like I've said, I've got more than a year's experience under my belt with this game, and countless more with other FPS titles. I've played all the maps, countless game setups, the entire 1p campaign, and multiplayer matches from 2 to 16 people. None of which has brought me around to the point of enjoying this game.

Personally, I don't give a flying f*ck about how well you play. I do well enough to usually end up in the middle of the pack or better, and with that I am satisfied.

How's was that for serious? I was hoping to just peacefully put my two cents in without having to worry about some fanboy coming and flaming me just because I don't like his game. Guess I was wrong.

I wouldn't say that Halo is that spectacular in its own right, but I would say that it's the best console FPS right now.

While yes, I'll agree that some of the weapons in Halo do kill faster than they probably should (which has been altered in Halo 2, if I hear right), so do the weapons in Counter-Strike, which you seem to appreciate more. Having weapons which kill quickly doesn't necessarily make or break a game, but because of the 'round' setup in CS, it works out a little better there.

This is the worst "argument" I've ever heard.

And this just shows that you're getting a little too offended that someone else doesn't agree with you.
Guess what. Not everyone likes Halo.
Guess what. Not everyone who doesn't like Halo is retarded.
Guess what. Not everyone who likes Halo is mature - example: you
Put simply, if you can get a group of agreeable people to play with, and can get some balanced teams, Halo is easily the best console FPS out. It's definately not perfect, but it's worth a purchase. I'd suggest just waiting and getting Halo 2, though.

If you are The Mexican from five south, I think darktoaster actually has played against you on my box and done pretty well.
See, you are just an ass. No one wants to play with you because you say things like "domework", "bitch-ass", "'nades", "plasies", "pwnd", and other stupid obsesive shit. Maybe if you were a more gracious winner, more people would respect your talent. Even if you can beat everyone in Rolla, no one wants to play another round with the asshole that does a victory dance when he wins a FFA.
And because its absolutely necessary...I will wipe the floor with you in Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced. A game that doesnt rely on spawn camping, but on pure turn-based strategy.

Ok, without this blowing even more out of proportion, I'll answer Jeepman's question...
People have played Halo for the last 3 years because it provided the easy access to a big game for you and your friends without having to lug a computer around or play on an internet connection. Halo is the best FPS game on a console, and yes, some things in the game are overbalanced, but that's what separates the "n00bs" from the "elites". Halo has changed the way the world looks at competitive gaming. If I read my articles right, MLG is going to be displaying all its Season2 tournaments on live tv. Yes, it has been done before, but this will be on a much larger scale.
Okay, I wasn't going to give my two cents about this game because of this is what I kind of expected to follow, but damn.
At first I completely would have agreed with "Dark Toast" about halo being way overhyped when I first started 3 years ago. The controls are brutal to learn coming off of Goldeneye and Perfect Dark with the 2 analog controls and everytime I played Multiplayer I was always last or 2nd to last out of the 10-16 people. It Totally Sucked Balls.
What changed was me. I asked to borrow a friends Xbox for a week (which back then it was still $250 and a big favor). I went through the entire campayne just to learn the controls. It took me a day, but I finally got used to it. Now this is where I see the biggest crowd go against Halo here, because the controls just don't work out for them (ussually because they're used to another console)
So I did that I knew the controls, still sucked it up but started getting better. Then I started to see the "Mountain", I could see that it got better and that it was worth playing. Now I'd say that I'm one of Rolla's decent players. I've played "The Mexican" before, of course he did kick my ass being in the top two, where I was Third to Fifth out of around 10 people.
Halo's Halo, you just have to get used to it. Most of the arguments I've heard against it don't even matter in Halo 2. The levels are better, the storys better, the weapons are more balanced, vehicles are both strong/weak, and almost every advantage that "Elites" had over "Noobs" have been removed or changed in Halo 2. Now everyone is pretty much starting from scratch together.
Koknocker69(PhiltheTameGoat for those of you on five south)...please dont disrespect Mexy. I love it when people say weapons in Halo are overpowered. Most people compare it to Counterstrike(which I have absolutely no problem with) in which any gun including the pistol can be a one shot kill if you are good enough. Just like Halo...if you have the sniper and shoot someone in the head..they die. Three shots...now even the pros dont get it everytime...it definitely takes skill...to avoid the other guy shooting at you while aiming at him. I mean guys COME ON the game is sexi plexi. Koknocker...we dont play seriously when we play with you..Trust me. So you and DarkToaster have never really experienced the true T-h3. I just want us all to get along. And I have retired from Halo as of last Saturday so I wont be accepting any more challenges. Worseley is 1337sauce.
P.S. Koknocker...I have never and will never say "plasies". I like to call them stickies, and attach them to peoples flanks.
T-h3 out
Without a doubt, there's definitely better players out there than me (whether they play at their full potential or hold back), but I'm okay with that. I don't own the game, so I don't mind. For me, the multiplayer is what the players make of it. It's up to them how much laming or fun can be had. I can find halo to be an outlet of entertainment in those impromptu moments that can show up and just have everyone playing for the hell of it. In that respect, it's a good ready-to-play FPS as mentioned before, but I just find it lacking in other situations.
That said, yes, I am certainly more partial to Counter-Strike. In there I feel as if I'm working and making other people work to earn kills more than Halo. The weapons are just as leathal (well, maybe a little less) as those that appear in Halo, but are harder to use because of a more realistic recoil system. Also, suprising other players (or turning said suprise around) seems more intense and gratifying, imo, than what halo can provide.

Ooh, even though I don't think that was directed towards me, I need to take you up on that offer sometime.

one thing i don't like about halo is the health system.... you have sheilds that automatically recharge? it encourages cowardism and running away from battles to recooperate. more fun but less skill required for single player, lame for multiplayer.
yes. the default gun you start off in the very beginning of the game is the BACKBONE of the entire game. it doesn't make any sense. how is it that i am killed by a guy with a pistol when i am shooting at him with an ASSAULT RIFLE?!? the pistol is more powerful? huh. interesting. that goes against every bit of common sense i have!
oh but what is really great are the vehicles....
yes, you can drive a warthog or the ghost or a tank. yes a TANK. but no matter, because you could have an army of tanks you'd still get sniped by some dude with a pistol in the mountains
the thing i really hate the most about halo has nothing to do with the gameplay, but how it's percieved to be the greatest incarnation of FPS gaming when really it's just a mediocre game. look at the shitty weapon selection. pistol. shotgun. assault rifle. holy FPS cliche! sniper rifle! yes! and then a few alien plasma weapons that straight up suck so much donkey dick NO one uses them. and if you do try to mix it up and use a plasma rifle bang bang you just got sniped by a dude with a pistol from 300 yards away! (perfect dark had over 35 unique weapons avalable. and you could carry more than 2 at a time. less realistic: yes. infinitely more entertaining? YES)
shitty options, too. even goldeneye had an easier multiplayer setup mode. they give you shitty options to chose from. but you can make your own, but you have to quit the game all the way to the main menu, then set up the game, save a "profile", restart multiplayer, load everyone's profiles, load the game, and play. why shouldn't you just be able to go down to "weapons" and switch it from "rockets" to "shotguns" without having to save a new profile? PD had the best multiplayer arena, you could change every aspect of the game right there from the menu. and not just what weapon type. you could assign different weapons to each slot. then you could add simulants (bots always makes multiplayer more fun), assign teams, tweak options like radar on/off and showing team colors. then you could save your own character and design their skin. shit, PD even kept track of your stats. not just kills/deaths. it counts how many rounds you fire, your percentage of headshots, overall accuracy, and awards prizes to the best performing players! "halo is competitive"? you say you are better than me? sure, you won a round against me, but lets look at our overall stats.
another hurdle making halo less competitive is the fact that you can only save your profile on one xbox. back when we used to play PD i had my character saved on my memory card. this way when i went to my buddy dan's house, i'd just bring my controller -- and my character. i played halo last summer on corey's xbox. now i'm playing it on bretts. i had to remake my character and everything. now think of how many other xboxes i have played halo on (i can think of 3 others) all of which have a character of mine saved on it. sure, you COULD use a memory card for the xbox... but how many xbox ownes do you know that own a memory card? i don't know a single one.
my point is, halo really isn't that great of a game. it's just new. if you compare it straight up to perfect dark, PD will win in every way except for elements out of their controls like graphics capabilities etc.
Most people compare it to Counterstrike(which I have absolutely no problem with) in which any gun including the pistol can be a one shot kill if you are good enough.
Not true, but it's still a fairly valid argument. Even without a helmet there are some (commonly used) weapons that won't kill you in one shot, including the glock and navy.
I think the main argument about the power variance of the weapons in CS vs. Halo is that you can't just run, find, and pick up an AWP, AK, Colt, Auto-snipe, etc. in CS. You first have to be able to kill enemies with the weaker guns, and then use your saved up cash in order to get the better weapons, or at very least be able to kill someone with a more powerful gun and then take it. In Halo, however, you can just spawn, find the sniper rifle, and use it. Also, there's no possibility of spawn camping in an (official) CS map, because of the round system, so you can't just snipe someone as they spawn.
I don't think this was meant to boil down to a CS vs. Halo topic though. They're both very different games, and both good in their own right. And when people here have been civil, I think that's gotten across. Some people like Halo, some don't. Just give your opinions of the game, not of the other people that have given their opionions.
a few alien plasma weapons that straight up suck so much donkey dick NO one uses them. and if you do try to mix it up and use a plasma rifle bang bang you just got sniped by a dude with a pistol from 300 yards away!
This reminds me...
Am I the only one who prefers a match in which there's only alien weapons, no shields, no vehicles and about 150% health?
I've always seen this as the most fun option, since it makes you get close enough to your opponent to provoke a (more) lengthy firefight. It also increases team dynamics, imo, seeing how it nearly forces you to work together and cover each other if you want to survive going against more than one or two opponents.

I find Halo with 2<4 people pretty boring in multiplayer.
PD doesn't support more then 4 people. You have the bots, but it's not the same thing when you hear everyone in your house on two different floors screaming in CTF when a guy makes a run to his base with the flag.
Halo does have better graphics, but it also has better gameplay. Everyone keeps talking about the weapons in Halo. Who Cares, at least to me it was a pretty balanced game. Especially when it's a team game. Now if there was only one place to get the pistol maybe I'd say it's really dumb, but when you start with it.
Halo 2 fixed (in my opinion) all the bitching that I've heard about the weapons.
I havn't heard a single thing from the people who hate Halo that hasn't been fixed in Halo 2. It's fixed!!! The only real argument came from "DarkT0aster" about the controls, which are very unique to FPS games, but very easy to get used to after a while.
