Is anybody/has anybody taken Physics 107? What can you tell me about it? I'm looking at taking it next semester, just for fun. (Yes, I'm a masochist.) I know it's not easy, but the subject matter's intriguing and I'm enjoying Pringle's online lecture slides. I really want a better understanding of the basics of modern physics.

So Phys 107--did you learn anything? Was it worth it? Would you recommend it to a non-major?

I am currently taking it and I like it a lot. I would recommend taking it if it interests you. I like Prof Pringle and it isn't very difficult.

I took it FS04 with Dr. Story. He's a fucking badass. By far the best Physics professor I've had... Not only is he easy, but he actually explains the material and does a damn good job of presenting it. Plus he's pretty fucking funny... Not something you find normally in a physics prof.

I recommend the class. I almost managed an A in his class (I had an A going into the final, but I blew off studying for it as opposed to my other final in Fluids that I had that day), but I ended up with a B because I didn't study too much for the final, when I should have put in a *decent* amount of studying.

EDIT: If you get Dr. Story, I have a damn good file you're more than welcome to borrow... Like most good professors, he doesn't really change the homework or tests, so the file should be almost an exact replica of what you'd expect for the semester.

Thanks guys. I think if all my other classes work out, I'll take it. Looks like they've got Dr. Story lined up to teach it next fall. I need a fun class, and the stupid met class I was looking at conflicts with dang near everything I want/need to take. Stupid Wednesday lab. But from what I've heard before and from what you all are saying, I think this'll be good.

Thanks Swirls, I'll keep you in mind for that file.

Intro to Modern Physics is by far one of my favorite classes I've ever taken here. And Dr. Story is one of the best professor's I've had, somewhat challenging, but nothing too bad... just enough to keep you interested. Highly recommended to everyone. The first chapter about relativity is mind boggling.

107 and 207 are basically the same class. One is for non majors and the other is for physics majors ... forget which is which. Dr. Story is teaching 207 this semester.

207 is for physics majors, but it's only offered in the spring. Therefore, in the fall, physics majors take 107 as well.

And yes, since I didn't mention it before, Physics 107 was by far the easiest physics class that I've taken here, and I enjoyed it the most (fuck Bieniek... I'll always hate that piece of shit).

I concur completely.

Physics 107 is good times, I like Dr Pringle. I find his presentation of the material to be concise and complete. I liked bieniek too, and I still can't figure out why people don't like him. :?

Not really, he makes it seem like he's all badass an whatnot, but his rules are fair, and he stands by them. His presentation of his philosophy is designed to intimidate, and to fear making a mistake, because mistakes cost you. He makes mistakes cost more than you're used to, but that isn't really a big deal. So you work harder to make fewer mistakes. This working harder leads to more learning, which is why you're here in the first place.

His running of physics 23 is quite impressive.

I think most of the students that recently had Bieniek actually like him whereas most of the older students despise him. So either he's gone soft, or the newer students aren't as overly sensitive.

I hated how two similar mistakes could be worth so much difference. One might only cost you 2 points whereas the other might cost you 18. Made no sense to me.

Show up to the lectures. Laugh.
Start the homework early. Sweat.
Study for the tests. Relax.
Stay for the whole test hour. Succeed.

That's about it. And Swirls went through it, too. He's absolutely right. One of the best classes ever.
