umr-mail3 is down, but 4 and 5 still work. approximately 2500 mailboxes are on mail3, so those people are just sol until they can get it working again.
And the latest word as of about 5 minutes ago, it's more hardware problems. Basically it a few shitty DELL POS's, they've been out to fix them twice and the raid controllers on them keep pussing out.
There's no worse feeling than coming back to your room and seeing a request for job interview sitting in your mailbox, but you can't read the god damn thing because the stupid mail server is dead again....

Yeah, that aint no shit... I say we get the 2000 of us that are fucked out of email and mail them every hour until they fix it.

Probably never... I dont know much about the mail system here or anything like that, but I doubt they would push everyone over to a 'newer' system like Micro$oft Exchange or whatever it is... I think they'd be better off going on http://www.pricewatch.com, getting some good server boards, and putting Redhat on it, (which is free)... But hey, what do I know, I'm just a dipshit student
A few things I've noted since deciding to migrate to minermai before the mass migration where they will undoubtedly screw up everyone's email who waits:
1. On the unix server, I have had no mail problems in over a year. The reliability and maintenance difficulties CIS has been trying to convince us of are simply not existent.
2. In the month since I've migrated, there have been at least 5 seperate occasions where I've tried to check my mail and not been able to for at least a 1 hour period. This is especially pathetic considering I'm not one of the ones who is currently fucked by the mail server outage.
3. In the month since I've migrated, there are at least 2 important emails I know of that I have not received. One from a teacher revising a homework problem, which I then lost points for since I didn't get the email, and another to let me know that my key for a lab I need access to for my senior project was ready to be picked up. These are the only two that I know of that I never received, so I'm sure there's plenty more that I do not know of.
In summary, this is rediculous. I can't entirely blame the CIS for this one because the whole exchange mail thing was a decision of the UMSystem, but still, for a technical university this is just pathetic. They should keep the accounts active on the working unix server until they've got the exchange server working as close to 100% as possible and well tested, so that if the exchange server isn't working, we could still get mail from the unix server.
We have worked with MICROSOFT throughout last night and all day today
^^CIS ^^^^^^^WHO?
trying to get a successful restore of umr-mail3. At this point MICROSOFT
^^^^^^^^
recommends abandoning the umr-mail3 platform as it is not responding in
reasonable way to various EXCHANGE related tasks. We have successfully
^^^^ fucking up ^^^^^^^ ^^ CIS
restored 2 of the databases to the machine but it is unstable and the third
MS software ^^^^^
database will come online.
To accomplish this plan we have constructed new hardware for a replacement
^^CIS ^^^^^^^ pile of old junk
machine. We are installing Windows 2K server and Exchange at this time.
So mail can fuck up again^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
We will then restore the databases to this machine. We will then disconnect the
^^ CIS ^^CIS
mailboxes from umr-mail3 and have them connected to the new server. At that
point if the restore and the reconnect are successful we will be back in
production with mail from the 19th. We expect this activity will take at least
until 12:00am this evening if all goes well. At the same time we are repairing
the original databases offline.
We will then xmerge in mail from yesterday and today. When that is completed we will xmerge in all the mail that can be recovered.
We really appreciate your continued patience and we are still working 24 hours
to resolve this issue.
basically all the mailboxes on server 3 were corrupt...not sure why. They are building a new machine to replace mail3 and restoring mail with a tape backup from 2/19. Soon as the mailboxes from mail3 are repaired, they'll be merged onto the new server.

yeah, so what... i want my fucking mail from 2/20 until today... who gives a fuck about before that?
Seems that the email service is down again.... won't even let me log in. Does anyone have a status report, so I know what the fuck is going on? Seriously, this is ridicuous....
