The people in the pictures have got it all wrong. Think sideways... NES-style.

Still, there's no denying it. It's fucking wierd but could have some potential. Might be cool if that controller could add some functionality by interacting with the TV itself for shooters and whatnot. There's got to be a reason why this picture has it shown being waved around.

True as that may be, I just think it would be hard to do any smashing with just 2(with possibly a third button on the little analog stick extension) and an analog stick. And how will you pay N64 games(since the Revolution is backwards compatible)? That controller had buttons, buttons, and buttons. But of course, if anyone could pull it off, it would be Nintendo.

Oh craps, I just realized something. They HAVE to have a light gun game. The controller has a frickin' trigger. THEY HAVE TO HAVE A LIGHT GUN GAME!!

I could see the controller working really well with FPS when you add on the analog stick. Movement with the analog stick and aim/view with the sensor on the remote. That to me seems far more fun than mouse/keyboard setup.


Unless they throw a gamecube controller into the launch package, I could see how this would alienate alot of 3rd party developers though. Oh well, the reason to own nintendo consoles is for their first party games anyways.

Heh.. that article definitely doesn't make me look forward to it. I dunno though. Maybe it'll be closer to the quality control of a mouse and keyboard. Except a keyboard has more than 3 buttons. In fact, my mouse has more than 3 buttons haha.

i remember when the cube controler first came out.. its still my favorite, at the time i thought it was rediculous. nintendo knows what they are doing.

The gamecube controller still seems a bit limited to me. I don't really expect anything to beat out the mouse and keyboard within the next couple years, but I could be proven wrong.

I think there's 4 buttons accessible...not that thats much of an improvement. You've got 2 on the analog stick, a B button on the bottom of the remote, and a A button on top of the remote. If they have some sort of button similar to the L3/R3 on a PS2, then thats 5. Also you might be able to reach the d-pad as well. Which could be used to cycle through weapons etc.

Most importantly though, is the fact that every single one of these buttons I've mentioned is accessible independently and simultaneously. Try hitting only square and O on a PS2 without having to reposition your hands. This opens up the possibility for several different button combinations that were otherwise unaccessible.

Couple that with the fact that certain motions while holding certain buttons could add even more funtionality. Similar to the middle mouse strokes in Mentor Graphics Suite. Opera web browser also offers this ability.

I started out this post just trying to mention that there are 4 buttons, and halfway into it I realized how deep this HMI is. It seems intuitive at first, but to the ambitious developers, its as deep as a controller can get. It rivals the Steel Batallion controller, in such a small package nonetheless.

Now I'm extremely excited about this.

edit, i just read about the motion sensors.. i like what this controler could do for mecha games, if it can sense tilt and what not like it says, and depth, mecha games could get some very hardcore improvments.


The one major thing i do like about this.. is that you can position it however you want to, one think i've always disliked about a direction/button gaming bad is you cant get into a natural position, like i can with mouse and keyboard, but with this controler you can lay your arms just about whever you want, its sort of cool.. now to the darker side

i spoted a z, and a sub z, what about l and r? only one joystick is a bummer to, i liked fps with two.. this makes more of a pc-esque setup, but there will be games that won't be the same without two joysticks.. the buttons, wheres the x and y? how am i supposed to play super metriod? how am i supposed to play smash bros? the only thing i can think of.. for smash bros is using the d pad as a four button setup, making 5 buttons, incombination with b.. however i don't see this being a decent fighting game setup, ever. and this still does not answe how i will be playing metriod.

one other feature i do like.. the control stick nunchuk thing, it leaves expansion for other perhipals to be added.. like x and y buttons >_<
so far i hope this is just the first released idea and not the final, i'll be very disappointed if this is the final controler, it looks great, will probaly play great, but only within certain genre, at the risk of blowing donkey balls at the other ones, or having to have multiple controler types, no.
well see what happens though, if theres a system i will buy, it best have the nintendo logo.

Wow that looks very nifty. That IGN article was really great, describing all of those possibilities.
