Just curious what anyone thinks of the guys standing at the puck day in and day out telling you it is a good day to buy your green, (likeas early as october). We know what what is being sold and we don't need to be bothered everyday and then followed 20 feet after we say we aren''t intrested. Is anyone else bothered by this or have an opinion?

It certainly annoys me, but if they want to try and tell me stuff, they can. I just mess with the guys now if they hound me about it.

They have to wear their jackets all the time you moron. St. Pat's is the only thing cool about Rolla and is the only reason people under 30 visit this campus anymore. Why dont you buy a damn shirt and take some pride in the school. If you want them to stop bothering you, just talk to them and get to know them. If they know you, they just say hi, and they dont try to sell you shit.

By the way, I am not a St. Pat's committee rep if that is what you were assuming.

It's called PRIDE. If you spend a ton of time devoted to one organization you'd be proud. The jacket is proof of their hardwork.

No reason to call him a moron. I didn't know my freshman year why they wore their jackets every day. Granted, now I know, and sort of understand, but it's a little harsh. Personally, I get a little tired of them hounding me every day. It has even caused me to change my habits. For instance, I will usually take the long way around the puck area during the middle of the day to avoid them, or slip inside the bookstore area to get around them. When I bought my shirt, I walked directly to the table, made eye contact with the guy, and had my wallet pulled out, and I said the first words. They're like any other salesmen, you've just got to be direct with them, and let them know that YOU are in charge. If they give you trouble, then alter your habits so they don't contact you, and when you do business with them, take command of the discussion. Once you learn the game, it's rather simple.

Wow, for a minute there I forgot we were talking about St. Pat sweatshirts and thought we were talking about international business and conglomerates. Gotta let them know who's in charge?? Sure thing. My personal way to avoid the puck is to live in TJ and be a CompEng major. The last time I was farther than HSS was last semester I think.... unless I have a specific reason other than class to be on campus I guess.

I understand that they have to show their St. Pat's spirit at all time. Why don't they just print out a bunch of T-shirts for summer instead? Or is it necessary to torture those guys to get some attention? And how often do you think they have the jacket clean after wearing them every day? They are the contribution to the horrible smell in Computer Science and EE. I bought my sweat shirt and they still bother me every time.

Anyway, I haven't seen much "hounding" from them, they say something like "Hi do you want to buy a sweatshirt? no? come on....buy one!" which is very different from them following you around and shoving their wares in your face. If you don't like it, ignore them.

The reason they start selling early is because they need lots of money to put on one of the biggest parties in the country. I personally think they don't have to sell all the time, but oh well, they think so and that's fine. At least they're selling something cool, to put on a party for us, rather than some bullshit like long-distance service which serves mainly as a means for profit.

The reason they wear their jackets all the time is the same reason the military wears a uniform. The jackets are their uniform. If you want to be on St Pats board, you wear a jacket, and if you don't want to wear a jacket, you don't go out for St Pats board. It's not "torture" when you've got the choice whether or not to do it.

To the next person that dis's Pat's--FUCK YOU! Pat's is one of the few cool things about this school. Name one other where the teachers don't care that you come into class piss drunk. Name one other where you get school off for a week to party! Name one other where we have true pride. Many schools will spout out fake shit about how cool their sports team is or how well their schooling is but what school has a mass following of people that are actually proud of our celebration. I'm not on the board either but I fully support the entire tradition, even those that have been banned (such as open drinking games and Alice) ;)

Anyways, please, instead of avoiding subjects you don't know learn about them--you might actually find you agree/like them.

I have to agree, that St. Pat's does give us a name, something to be proud of, and the way it is celebrated is probably unique to UMR. I do regret missing the past two years of celebration to go home, and I regret having to miss this one. (I'm playing host to a ROTC tour of my home town, Little Rock Air Force Base.) The camcorder and pics I saw of last year's looked great time. So great even, that the guy who took them graduated this town 20 years ago, and this is the only reason he comes down. Talk about loyalty!
Yes, money is an issue. Why else would they be selling sweatshirts to motorists driving past the Mobil station on Saturday afternoons? Why else would they start selling them in September? There's a lot of work involved. And it probably does help the campus. I just don't think I would go out and do it. But then again, I'm a flaming homosexual or a butt-plug scavenger or something. At least according to Mr. Coward down there.
