Does anyone have a Media Center 2005 disk that I could borrow. One of my friends has an HP(they don't give you a disk, they do the sys. recovery thing) that he goobered up the system recovery partition on too. So, I need a disc to get him up and running. He has a licence(the sticker with the number) but no stinkin disk. Help!

The key from the HP shouldn't work with a "regular" media center disk.

i dont see why not, you install with a disk and the correct activation key should get you passed the 60 day trial.

Because the activation key from the HP version uses a different algorithm than the activation keys for a regular disk.

I'm sure a regular media center cd would work.... We just don't have one due to HP's relentless experimenting with not giving you jack crap for actual media in case(heaven forbid) the drive goes out or you inadvertantlly erase files.

I know I've used a 'regular' winxp home cd with my HP laptop's key and others have used my cd with their keys(non-hp compys). I dunno if there is a difference. Possibly there is one between 'oem' licenses and 'retail' licenses; I don't know of anyone who had actually bought WinXp outright to try it though.

Is that really cheaper than them doing it themselves?

Thats just dumb. Dell does the right thing and gives you a plain Win XP disk, and driver disks, none of the stupid system restore crap.

Yes it is cheaper...they just have to send you a blank CD, and the files that are on the HD have just been imaged on there.

Where as, if they sent out a CD with WinXP already on it, they'd have to press each of those discs, which I'm sure would cost much more.

Don't get me wrong...purely for customer support reasons they should spend the extra money for sending out WinXP on a CD, but they don't...
