I used to use putty for my comp sci 53 class and I just randomly wanted to use see some of my old programs so when I tried to log onto gpunix1.cc.umr.edu, the terminal window comes up but I get "telnetd: No authentication provided. " showing up. I haven't changed any settings on Putty since Ive last used it so I dont know what the problem is. Any idea?

If you're launching Putty from the command line, use:

putty -ssh gpunix1.cc.umr.edu

If you open Putty's window and fill out the dialog box, make sure the SSH radio button is checked (not the Telnet one).

You can also put a file named ssh.bat (and the Putty executable) in your main Windows directory that has the following in it:

start putty -ssh %1

This will let you launch Putty in SSH mode and connect to the host just by typing "ssh <hostname>" (like you would in *nix) in the Run box or at a command line.
