I've installed Mandrake 10 and I'm trying to get a Samba server going. Right now I can go to another computer and punch in the IP into Internet Explorer. I see a list of icons with all of the folders that I wanted shared on the linuxbox but each folder requires a user name and password. How do I get rid of this?

Code:
[global]
        netbios name = fsrv
        encrypt passwords = true
        map to guest = bad user
        max log size = 200
[root]
        browsable = yes
        public = yes
        path = /mnt/vault

That's pretty much my smb.conf. Should make /mnt/vault browseable to guest users at //fsrv/root

It's letting me see the folder but when I click it I get

Quote:
Logon Failure: Unknown user name or bad password

At no time did it ever ask for a username or password.

I changed it to share and now when I click on the folder I get a login prompt. No matter what user name or password I put in, it won't let me though. I tried to make the folder as public and open as possible, but still nothing. I set the encrypted passwords to yes and no on both my winbox and linuxbox. Just curious do I have to mount anything for this to work and if so, what is the command?

What kind of permissions do the files/directories have? If they aren't at least world-readable I don't think Samba can access them.

Yea, after overlooking something like that I'm going to take my dumb ass back to Windows now. Sorry for being an idiot. Problem solved. Thanks everyone.

Meh. Don't beat yourself up over it. God only knows how many times that sort of thing has bit me in the ass :)
