 Post subject: Engine Build....Formula SAE? Mechanical Engineers?

I am going to be build up my little 1.8 Liter Integra engine this semester and summer and since I'm staying in Rolla I'm just seeing if UMR has an accessible place to help out with the build up. This engine is a spare so it's not a time issue at all. I'll need a bore/hone and a crank balance (up to 10kprm). The deck and head will probably have to be re-surfaced as well. For the building part I need a torque wrench, micrometer, feeler gauges (for the piston rings) and anything else necessary for a bottom end build up.

My question is if there is anything that UMR or the Formula SAE team can help provide me for a fellow car enthusiast :) . If there is some sort of fee that's OK too because I just would like it cheaper then a machine shop :wink: .

If there is anything else you could help me with like and engine stand or an engine lift that would be very appreciated. I just want to see what's out there. Thanks guys.

I had my block taken to a machine shop and had the cylinders honed, crank balanced, block vatted, and new freeze plugs put in for just $90. If you can take your engine apart, then taking it to a machine shop to do the precision work (the kinda stuff you DO NOT want to mess up on, lol) is worth it in every way (counting time in this equation, of course). I wouldn't recommend boring/honing cylinders yourself (unless of course you have experience doing this), and vatting it yourself is a near impossbility (unless you happen to have the equipment to do so).

Then again... mine was a chevy small-block, but I imagine the work into honing is the same (cept twice as much on a v8 ;)

This is going to take place here in rolla? If i stay here this summer taking classes, i'd actually like to see and follow some of the build up if its not too much to ask. Sounds pretty neat.

note: I helped pull a chevy 350 out of an old silverado and an original datsun 280Z engine for a swap for a friend.

Wow ! for a bore/hone/crank balance. on a v8? Where at? I was quoted $90 for just a bore/hone on an inline 4! :shock: . The crank balance was two hundred some dollars.

Yeah the build up will take place here in Rolla. I basically need help pulling it out and pullin gin the new one. I was just wondering if UMR did anything that could help me...maybe rent an engine puller :wink: ? Or feeler gauges?

FYI, feeler guages and torque wrenches aren't that expensive. You can get a decent (but foriegn made) click-style torque wrench for about $30, which should work fine if you only plan on using it only every now and then. Both things are good to have around anyway if you work on your own car most of the time. A engine hoist is more expensive, which is why it is always a good idea to make friends with someone that has one.
