You see things around campus for Black History Month and things for international students...but you don't see or hear mention much of things that involve the WOMEN.

Wednesday is International Women's Day...yet they say nothing about it.

THIS ENTIRE MONTH is WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH but you don't see any events going on for.

My point is this...how do they (recruiters) expect to get more women at this school when they don't even recognize months like this and days like wednesday?

I know you seek readers don't really care and will likely say something rude about women because of this post....but I'm really bothered by the fact this is going by unnoticed.

There are a handful of us girls who are wanting to get something up and going for this month ...but I'm still really bothered by the fact that Stuco or even just RAs aren't doing anything.

UMR can't even have an event for National Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day, February 23rd of this year, which is the day UMR should do a lot for.

Every day that isn't Women's Day is by default Man's Day. Damn it feels good to have a penis.

Nah, the reason they don't mention it here is because we all believe every day is Women's Day. Damn it feels good to not have a penis.

Who is "we"?

For a serious answer to Will's question... the point of having a day (or month) for a particular group is to show the achievements that they have.. achieved through their lifetime. No one needs to be reminded that white males have achieved something. We're the largest group in the US (and as a friend said, probably the most hated). We founded the country, we control the presidency (so far). Do I think we need a day or month for those groups? Well, I don't think I do. I know that Amelia flew over the ocean. I know that Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. I know all about Martin Luther King Jr. and the peanuts. Those are all that really come up during the events anyway. It's not like you learn something new each year. The people who think that those groups haven't contributed anything probably aren't going to think that they have no matter how many days are dedicated to them.

No one because I wasn't being serious.

Actually I'd prefer there was no women's day and just a little more respect year round, but...I'll shut up now.

I think Martin Luther King Jr. was famous for something other than peanuts. Can't quite put my finger on it though.....

This month shouldn't be a women's month.

After all, this month has National Steak and BJ Day (March 14th, for those who are curious) which is, by it's very nature, a man's holiday.

They should make women's month August; nothing special happens then. Wait, August has 31 days. Give them September.

honestly, i dont pay attn to the "**** month" as every month has like 6 things on it. so, basically, respect the achievements all the time, and ignore the race/sex/religion/whatever-the-fuck-else of the achiever........

oh, and sutherlands, nice av

It is sad to think we do have to have days to get respect for women or African Americans...or anyone. However, we do these in order to show honor and to inform others of great things that these people accomplished.

All of history is WHITE MAN history so we don't have a "white man's history month"...but you never hear all about the women that made an impact on society.

Amelia...sure, you hear about her sometimes...but please tell me she's not the only one you all can name.

Some of the most notable names that I can remember hearing about are:
Harriet Tubman
Clara Barton
Eleanor Roosevelt
Susan B. Anthony
Rosa Parks
Elizabeth Blackwell
Helen Keller
Lucretia Mott
Georgia O'Keeffe
Louisa May Alcott
Soujourner Truth
...so on

but the thing is...that leaves SO many women out

Girls today and young women entering college and planning for their futures need a sense of women history. They need to know where we've come from and what we're heading towards and as long as we remain unequal (yes, gentlemen, we are still unequal in terms of wages)...then we need to emphasis a sense of pride in women history.
