Well, it seems I have found the culprit:

If you see this person, please inform the authorities by smoke signal.

If it's that bad, wouldn't the RAM send up its own smoke signal?

There's a 2 gig set of corsair xms on newegg for $119.99 AR.

You should check it.

ehh, the system can run quite fine on almost nothing, I'm sure 768 megs will do just fine instead of 1gig

Seek is running on Linux, not Microsoft Windows 2003 Server
*cough* *cough* *cough*.

The box I have set up is just a P3 500Mhz with 512 Megs of RAM.

http://r01jshnp7.desktop.umr.edu/~jason/

No problems at all. I also understand that I do not have the traffic seek does, but I do have ICE running so that people can hear UMR PD via Winamp, so there is a 'load' present.

What happened this time? I assumed you replaced the RAM when it came back online last night.

For 8+ hours?

Must've been some interesting HDD action. You're jsut like me--I need to learn to put the side of the case back on and quit messing with the compy, they tend to break when poking around inside of them.

Despite appearances to the contrary, most IDE devices are not hot-swappable. Especially the one containing your root partition.
