Ive got to make a decision, I have two 15 hour semesters left to graduate.
However, I also have to get in another 3 hour Advanced humanities/SS class. (honestly I'd rather take an advanced math course than another HSS course) But being as how they like to sap money out of us for stupid classes..........
-I have two choices, take an 18 hour semester (not a good idea for me IMO) or stay in rolla and take it over the summer, however....
-Im also trying to save up for an engagement ring, and the cheapest one my gf has given me the option of buying her is around $3700.
I only have about 700 saved up so far. She offered to give me 500 out of some bonds her grandma gave her to help pay for it, so I just need to make about another 2500 over the summer.
I'd like to find a job for the summer (in rolla). If I go home I can make $10/hr, so does anyone know of anything I could do here that would make at least $7/hr? It would also have to be at least 30 hours a week.
Ideas?
A $3500 engagement ring?!?!!? Holy crap... but I won't say anything on what I think about that.
Anyway, you could get a job at fedex or ups. It's good money, but it's early morning (think 4AM). If it's during the summer, I'm sure you could handle it though. Personally I'd take an 18 hour semester, but there you go. (Also, if you have people skills... try getting a job as a waiter... at a good restaurant on a weekend you can make ~$20/hr (Although I don't know if we have any "good" restaurants in Rolla))

This summer I'm taking an upper level Psychology course through Meramec Community College in St. Louis to count for one of my upper level HSS electives. $73/credit hour, and it should be super easy, and get me out of here in 4 years total. If you have opportunites to work elsewhere than Rolla, you might want to look into an online course somewhere.

lol, well the 3700 I suppose might be a little cheaper, she wanted a $1700 setting with a 3/4 carat diamond, so together, about $3700, however, I think the 1700 comes with 4 diamonds that I could sell when i replace it with the single 3/4 carat one, but I doubt I would get more than 400 for all four diamonds that originally came on it.
I suppose...... you know... that 3 months salary thing? right now i suppose im living on about 600/month, so... 1800 is the most i should spend.. right???
I don't think it's really the price as much as it is her telling you which one to get.
Oh, and fuck diamonds, I'm never buying a diamond in my life. They're not rare, just expensive because some douchebag company has a monopoly on the world's supply.
Is there any way to push the marriage back a little bit? It seems kind of ridiculous that you have to worry about classes and making enough money by the time you graduate just to get a ring.

YEAH, that was a fucking ADVERTISEMENT by a diamond company that somehow got turned into a rule.

well, her reasoning for telling which ones she likes is just fine in my opinion, i would hate to get her a ring that she is going to think is ugly for the rest of her life if i pick it out.
I wish that synthetic diamonds were more far along than they are now. Much better diamonds for alot cheaper. DeBeers (monopoly owner) is really trying to launch an anti-man made diamond campaign as it would ruin their profits. They have even bought entire countries' supplies of diamonds to prevent them from getting to the open markets. They are bastards, but what can you do eh? Synthetics are nice, but most are only colored, and she wants a clear one.
I think im going to look for some online courses. Surely I can find something, unless a decent job pops up around here for the summer.
It would be ideal to wait until i have a nice job after i graduate, but she told me to give her at least a year to plan the wedding (BS if you ask me, there cant be that much crap to do)
but i do want to get married shortly after i graduate, not a year and a half after i graduate, so thats why im trying to get it done before probably next christmas.
I may go up to Fedex thursday, see what they pay and how many hours i could get if i worked there, thanks for that suggestion.
Not buy diamonds. I don't mean any offense to you or your girl by this, but personally, I think a girl is a pretty big bitch if she doesn't care about learning about the diamond industry and insists on NEEDING a diamond for some stupid symbol. But I digress; my thoughts on marriage itself are pretty far out there, so I don't expect anyone to agree with me.

i completely agree, its absurd. If you asked anyone on the street why diamonds are expensive they would tell you that they are rare. yay for taking a exorbant(sp?) advantage of tradition

my dad has never bought my mom a diamond. that is how he even grew up. just tell her, how you would like to buy her a diamond, but you dont want to fuel terrorist in afirca using child labor. if she wants to support terrorists that use child labor, well whatever.
I say take the summer class. dont try to do 18 hours, fail a class and stay an extra semester. might as well do it that way.
As for the original topic, if FedEx doesn't work out then waiting tables is always a good idea. I'm sure if you could get a job waiting tables at Zeno's or Applebee's (or any upper-end Rolla restaurant) you'd probably be able to clear a decent amount of cash.
Hotel night jobs are always an option. I've known a few people who worked front desks at several hotels, and it's inevitably an easy job that pays a decent amount (~$7/hr).

I agree... but then you put that exception on there. The one I bought was like $850 after their "sale" price. My fiance would have been happy with a cracker jack ring.
