Since I'll be living in a house next year instead of shitty TJ, I'll need to furnish it. A desk I'm not too worried about because I can buy that at an Office Max or Office Depot in STL, or Staples down in Rolla, and manage to fit the box in my car. But a matress, box spring and frame just isn't going to fit in a 2 door car, and I don't know anyone with a truck, SUV or van. Are there any decent furniture stores in Rolla where I can buy a bed (and probably a dresser too) for a good price, but more importantly, will deliver?

Also, for those of you who have purchased beds before...approximately, what does one cost? Not a used one either; I'd much rather have a new one.

new ones arent cheap, but around here you got big lots, walmart, and this mom and pop place on 4th street. A friend of mine got some stuff through there

This is in regards to your question about getting a bed and mattress.

I too moved out of TJ and was in need of a bed and mattress, fortunately I still had my loft I made while in TJ (more on that in a minute).

O-Kay first off DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT purchase your mattress from any store with mattress in its name or any sibilance of a bedding store. I did some research (being the nerd I am) on the Internet prior to moving out on the estimated costs related to purchasing a bed. Just about everything I found led me to believe that the whole bedding thing is a scam! Thus DO NOT purchase your bedding ‘equipment’ from a mattress store.

So what’s a guy to do you may ask.

Unfortunately you may well need to find someone that has a truck, if not it would not be far from practical to rent a one-way / one-day U-hall.

1. Purchase your MATTRESS from the nearest SAMS store. I purchased their least expensive Sealy mattress and have no complaints about it. What about a box springs you may ask? SCAM! SCAM! Box springs from what I can tell are just another way the mattress industry tries to stick it to you. Perhaps you may think ‘this guys nuts!’, ‘everyone I know uses a box springs’! But think about it this way: How many bed sets to people purchase in their lives? Perhaps two at best… Get the picture?

2. What about a bed frame? Well assuming you’re a college student like me and I assume you are, you probably do not have cash coming out of your ass. Further more I assume you have some sibilance of the ability to design a simple wood frame from ‘2x4’ lumber.

Now I mentioned I had my loft from TJ, It is a bit over kill as I’m short (those who know me could attest to this) so I designed a king-sized loft I could walk under so I could have a desk and all, anyway I digressed…

Build your self a simple wood frame structure with two ‘2’x4’’s forming an “L” at each corner, run two long boards about 6’ (Please measure your mattress) and about 4 or 5 short boards about 3” long. You’re going to want to have the legs about two feet long (or what ever you feel in comfortable). I would highly recommend screwing two ‘2x4’s together forming an “L” to make up your legs. Remember you really do not need a box springs so you have to adjust the height accordingly. Lastly purchase floor underlay particle board (about the diameter of a dime for thickness). Screw the thing to gather, perhaps even purchase some angle brackets for extra strength (good idea if one “moves around a lot”)…. *cough*

So what does this cost? Mattress about $85. Wood (including under floor under-layment), screws, and brackets, about $40 at freaking most. Total cost $125. Granted I’m cheap but I just can not see spending upwards of $500 dollars on these mattress sets you see in advertisements…

I bought a decent Full sized matress, box spring, and metal frame for $300 at Furnitire Factory Outlet. No delivery though, but I had borrowed my parent's truck. Plan on spending at least $250 for a decent Full. Twins suck, and if you live off campus you should have room for a full or bigger.

I don't remember, they probably have it but it might cost extra. I was driving a truck so it was easier just for me to have it. I'd be suprised if they didn't have delivery.

Does Rolla have a U-haul rental place? I don't think I've ever seen one here.

I drove from rolla to branson with a twin mattress strapped to the roof of my sunfire when it was windy. It shouldn't be a big deal moving a twin or full mattress with a car around town. If you get box springs, that might be a bigger deal since it wont flex with rope like the mattress does.


You could though put the box spring on the roof, the mattress on top of that, then tie or strap it down. You won't be driving 70 mph, so it shouldn't take much to secure it.
