Yay, it's the weekend just before finals and the ALL campus workstations are down except for maybe 1 or 2 computers in the library.

No no one can access their files or do stuff that 1/2 the campus has due on monday (reports etc..) because apparently it's going to last till monday, the email sent out never said it was going to last all weekend.

oh and teachers cant get to their files either to post sample examples etc..

someone tell me WHY this couldn't wait another week, or at least NOT during the most crucial FINALS week.

Cause that would make to much sense.

The IT people hate their life so they have to make everyone else suffer in some way.

OK, so I could spend ten paragraphs explaining how IT picked this date, and why it really is the best out of all the alternatives, but people tell me I'm long winded, so lemme give you the short, short version:

You got the short end of the stick so the rest of campus doesn't have to.

The deal is that this filesystem conversion project has been in the works for more than two years now. It's huge. It touches 40+ servers, 5+ terabytes of data, 12,000+ accounts, and with sub-projects its over $150k in improvements to infrastructure alone. But, at some point, we had to pick a date to actually flip it all over.

We basically had three choices: Right before summer session finals, Right before fall semester starts, or Winter break.

Right before fall semester risks bleeding over into fall semester if there's a problem.

Winter break means we're sitting on a better alternative for 5 months.

So we picked right before sumer session finals. If we're right, everything goes well and people get a day off. If we're wrong, we've impacted a few hundred students and faculty, and not a few thousand.

And the new filesystem is up as of 5 hours ago. We were down for conversion for 25 hours, 11 minutes total. We're doing another round of testing tomorrow, official announcements should go out tomorrow or Monday.

Hugs & kisses!
-Eric

To all you haters:

In my personal expierence, any interaction with UMR-IT has been a positive one. If you have a problem and are willing to discuss it intelligently, then usually most conflicts can be resolved relatively quickly and painlessly. I have seen more professionalism and service from UMR-IT than I have see from most businesses in the corporate world. Every decision is made for your benefit, not for your detriment.

To UMR-IT:

As we all know, recieving flak for doing your job comes with the territory (unfortunately). I just want to say thank you, not just for the stuff that we know about, but also for the stuff that we dont know about. You guys must be working hard behind the scenes so that all we see are the little inconveniences. Keep up the good work and thank you for keeping an open ear to the student body.

How are there 12,000 user accounts? 6000 student accounts (max), 2000 faculty/stff, 1500 department/organization, still is only 9500.

BTW, as I've said before, of the administrative department/offices, I would list IT at the top of "student minded," and the easiest to get stuff done (with the possible exception of Student Affairs because of LEAD). Seriously, condsider the cashier's office, registrar's office, IT, res life, student life (think about how hard it is for stucco to do anything because of its size). Downtime is inevitable, but they seem to pick the least destructive weekends.

For the sync reports, it would've been nice for those to have been sent out in May, before school let out, as there was nothing I could do from here to recover those files.

You're welcome Heretic. And for the original poster:

Jk. But seriously, IT tries really really hard to insure the integrity and stability of the UMR network. This is why UMR is ranked as being one of the best University campus's in terms of network connectivity. Plus, the network engineers were working non-stop throughout the weekend to make sure that this conversion went quickly and smoothly. I think they deserve some congratulations for moving to this new system with next to no problems since it was such a massive undertaking.

IT sux big time. I have lived here 2 yrs and I have suffered heavy losses in research projects which is very weird considering I am a UMR student paying for the IT and I cant get my own environment.

I had 2 projects and 2 tickets which took more than a month and at the end I had to close the matter and look out of campus for the facility.

All the CLCs are locked and I cannot print to a color printer.
I still cant get my php and MySQL scripts running!

Hate IT (even though I know you guys are working hard - what we need here is working hard in the best interests of students -> not standards!)

Couldn't get to a color printer? Did you read a single e-mail from IT, or read the signs on the doors? They notified people well in advance, quitsher bitchin'.

Sounds like you really don't know what you are doing, and it also sounds like you don't know what services are available to you. You want your own environment? What does that even mean?

They aren't going to hand you with a dedicated *nix box just because you are a student, unless you are working on a project that requires such facilities (i.e. something for the greater good, or more to the point something that can make the University some cash). If you really want to run scripts, contact ACM, they let you use their servers for free, and might even help if you're nice to them.

I'll agree that sometimes I can't find a working printer on campus when I need one, but that's the only problem I have ever had in my four years here. You are provided with decent internet service (wireless / wired), on campus computers, lots of tech support, storage for your e-mail and files, and all the printing you can do before the paper/toner runs out.

If nothing else you might want to consider purchasing your own computer and printer. I've heard that if you have your own you can run whatever you want on it, and print all you'd like, but that may just be a rumor.

Nice try Fattybuddha

I very well know what I want but the IT is unable to give it to me cause they prob dont know how to do it or rather they are trying to set some standards to it!!!

Tried ACM too - No reply when I mailed the committee.

Its not a real special environment - Some of it included : php support, MySQL support, MATLAB webserver. my ticket went on for more than a month before I had to go out and purchase server space which could support this.

If UMR IT cant support its own research projects what is the use of those standards and computers!!
