So anyway I am trying to unfuck my comp and I need to start with getting
Windows XP to recognize all 300gigs of my primary HD. If I reinstall a
copy of Windows XP Pro with SP2 or SP1, will it recognize 300gigs without me doing partitions?
how much of the drive is it recognizing? you do realize that a 300 GB drive is 300 gb of UNFORMATTED space. after formatting you may drop down to 270 gb i dunno

What he is saying is by 300GB, the drive manufacturer actually means 300 billion bytes. In base two, which is how the computer works, 300 is about 279.5 gigabytes (gibibytes according to IEEE standards).[/url]

doesnt formatting also take down a couple gigs for redundency and checksum stuff? i may be wrong i dont know, i just assume that since there are different file systems, some more efficient than others that they have to have some kind of "dead space"

Yep. You lose a bit more space by formatting. Probably nothing significant though. The real killer is when you lose 20 gigs of space because hard drive manufacturers and programmers can't agree on whether or not to use base 2 or base 10.
