Not sure about brands really. I was looking at possibly a NEC or Viewsonic, probably still a CRT flatscreen.

Any suggestions/opinions/experiences?

I've been a big fan of Samsung. Had a 17 and 19 inch and had nothing but good things to say about both. Also have a plasma made by them. Good quality and decent prices.

I concur with LowMan. Samsung has excellent plasma monitors.

I have a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 930 SB 19" (Mitsubishi/NEC) CRT and I love it. I also have a ViewSonic VX922 19" LCD and I love it and it is hard to tell the difference between the 2 monitors when gaming, watching movies, and surfing the web. Plus the 19" LCD is bigger than the 19" CRT because LCD's are measured differently then CRT's.

I've been really happy with my Samsung SyncMaster 19" for years now (I have the 955df). If I had to get a new monitor now, I'd probably look into an LCD, because of power savings and the footprint on your desktop. I use a Dell Ultrasharp 19" at work, and they look pretty crisp.

If you go LCD anandtech has some good reviews:

I was looking primarily at NEC CRTs, as they seem more readily available and more within my price range.

Probably either:

or:

Though if anybody wants to donate some $$, I could get this one:

One question about LCD monitors. Why is the max res so much lower? I haven't seen a single LCD monitor that can show 1600x1200 for less than $350, but I can find CRT monitors that go up to 1920 x 1440 for $100 or less. Can LCD monitors really not show those higher res's?

No because the pixle size of an LCD can only go so small. If you want a rez higher than 1280 by 1024 then go for a CRT. BTW keep your other monitor for a 2nd monitor as having 2 is really nice.

I got a Dell 20" Widescreen LCD which they often have on sale for around $350, and it is an awesome monitor. Probably more than what you wanted to spend, but IMO, well worth it.
