I was wondering if anyone has explored the steam tunnels on campus. I was wondering if they are worth checking out.

There are video cameras and motion sensors. The cops will have you before you can get out. They're not that interesting anyway.

That big power plant near ME isn't meant to produce electricity. It only produces 500 kW if I remember correctly and buys the rest (~5 MW) from the local utility and distributes it across campus. It has coal burners which turn water into steam and they distribute it through pipes and steam tunnels which are then used to power the heaters across campus.

also, nowadays those tunnels are so full of fiber optic and whatever other cables, they're hard to get through. Back in the day my uncle used to go in them every once in a while, but now they're more of a bust. But if you like crawling through small spaces, you should check out the MSM Spelunkers.

Nothing to see here. Move along, move along...

What year were the cameras and motion sensors installed?

They weren't there in 2004. Must be recent.

I had heard that someone in 2002 got caught in the tunnels because of the newly installed motion sensors and/or cameras. I was a sophomore then, but I remember that because I had never heard of the steam tunnels.

i think there are camera/motion detectors but more towards the coal plant, i know some people that have been down there, they only got caught once, no repercussions but i think the guard on duty didnt really care, he actually told them to join the spelunking team

I was in them just before they tore down ME Annex. Not too exciting, but I did enjoy the graffiti.
