So I was planning on moving into an apartment or house this year. Last semester, I reapplied for my room in kelly just in case I couldn't find anything. Most of what I found was too pricy and I just decided to stay in Kelly.
Flash forward to today. A friend of mine is moving out of his apartment, and wanted someone to take over the lease. I checked it out, and the price and situation are perfect for me. I send an email to res life asking what I have to do to get out of my contract, and bam I get an email back saying its basically not gonna happen.
I've been in the room for barely a week now, and there is no way to get out of the contract unless I get married, have a kid, go on co-op, etc. Has anyone had a problem like this or know of someone who has, and got around it? I would be saving about $1000 a year if I were to move into this place and I don't mind paying extra contract cancellation fees. I'm just trying to find a way to make this happen, so if anyone has some advice or anything, I'd appreciate it.

They are just being dicks. As long as you have Junior status and are able to live off campus you should be able to get out of your contract. Id suggest actually going and talking to them in person.

AFAIK, even if you're a junior or above, you can only cancel the contract up to sometime shortly before the semester, or else, you're stuck. A bunch of bullshit if you ask me....
Well, if I had found out about this 9 days ago, I would have been fine, as I would not have checked in. Honestly I can't figure out why it would be a big problem, I could pay for the time I have spent here so far and extra. The fees are not a problem, as I would be saving over a grand moving into this apartment. I emailed reslife asking if I could sit down with somebody and try to figure out a resolution, maybe by paying extra or something, but I'm not holding my breath.
I think you had until June or July 30th to cancel your housing assignment without penalty. Good luck... I know you might be able to pay some kind of escape fee if you're a junior, and if you're not a junior there's some sort of waiver you have to fill out to go along with the fee.
If you wish to cancel this room assignment, please send an email including your name and student number to reslife@umr.edu indicating your desire to cancel. Once the request is received, our staff will verify that you are exempt from the campus residency policy and eligible for cancellation, and will send a confirmation email to you. If you do not receive a confirmation of your cancellation within 5 business days, please resubmit the cancellation request.
The penalties for canceling your room assignment are as follows:
Until June 1 -- no charge June 2 - 30 -- $80 July 1 - August 18 -- $160 After August 18 -- $160 + 5% room and board fees
I'm going into my 4th year here. I canceled out of my TJ room so I could move into an apartment, but was a little slow in doing so and had to pay the $160 fee. Otherwise it was relatively painless.

Yeah, I had looked at that, and assumed I'd have to pay the $160 and 5%, and I was fine with that. But apparently since I checked in, that doesn't apply anymore, or so they tell me. I am eligible for off-campus living, I've been a junior since last semester.
I asked, and there is no way to buy out of the contract. However, I am supposed to meet with Jennifer Nixon sometime this week, so I guess I'll see how that goes. Has anybody ever met with her and have any comments?
Did you sign anything else? If not, I think you are fine...
Nope, just the contract for kelly hall this year that I signed earlier in the spring.
Does anybody have a copy of a housing agreement that I could look over, I've been looking all over my room to see if I could find mine, but so far no luck. I'd like to be able to look it over and see if it says anything about this.
If the res life contract is crappy, signing one with Investment Realty is worse because there are no exceptions to get out of it that I know of. I'm not sure but I don't think you can even pay a fee to get out of it, which sucks if you are going on co-op.

I think that you can get out of it if you find someone to take over your contract. If they are getting rent money they probably don't care so much who it is from.
