Go into safe mode, disable some startup items using msconfig...

Has he changed anything recently, added any new software...

Is it a legit copy of vista?

Has it always done this? If so, reinstall.

Oh, and Vista is not all evil. Playing Company of Heroes with High Settings and DX10 shaders and particle effects make it worth keeping around.(then again my other computer is OSX)

/off topic.

I tried starting in safe mode and also I've disable all the startup items from msconfig... but it's windows explorer so it has to try to start up anyways. It's a legit copy of vista bought about 3 months ago. it started doing this about a week or two ago.

I'll probably have to do the reinstall thing, was just trying to avoid it now... oh, and his machine as a gig of ram..... so that's part of the evilness

Thanks!

Installed all the updates (if possible)? If not, you can try to search the MSKB and try and find a fix, DL it, and apply it on Vista pc.

I also use Vista, and (minus the very minor, infrequent quirk or two) I really like it. I have a DX10 card so, of course, that's a plus.
