What do you think about advertising useful things? My stance now is that advertising once in a while for local businesses (that people care about) is allright.
Any suggestions/comments?

I know of at least 18 pizza's that Domino's got tonight. I'm all for letting the campus know about interesting things like today.

Heck ya!
I think it's a good idea. I am more likely to find out about things from seek42 than anywhere else. Advertising for some campus things would be good too, like the UMR hockey team.
I don't think many people know about the UMR team, and that the team is really good. 2 weeks ago was the CRHL National Championship Tournament and UMR made it to the second round (top 16 in nation get here). This tournament includes div1 schools such as Michigan State, Purdue, Univ. of Florida, etc.
Ryan-
Thanks for posting that special for us. The response was even more than I'd hoped for. We took several orders for this special within the hour that it was posted.
I would look at it this way. For as long as seek42 has been in existence, you've been providing UMR students with a great service. I think this just adds that much more value to the service seek42 has to offer.
Internet advertising gets it's bad rap from the pop-ups, pop-unders, and porn banners that are so prevalent everywhere, none of which are present in this example. As long as you use discretion, and post things that are of serious usefulness to students, you're only increasing what seek42 has to offer.
I think everybody's a winner here. I know the students that ordered that special were satisfied with it, my manager was rather surprised (and happy) with the response, and I even got a tip on every delivery I made for that special. FWIW, I think I can talk the manager into doing this promo every Monday. Why don't y'all post here with a "hell yeah" if you'd like to see that happen.
my apoligies...I was rereading this, and realized my first post looked like a blatant thread-hijack. let's return the topic of discussion to advertising in general. I'll start a new thread for feedback and "hell yeah's"

Mike Toecker, biggest tool on earth and the most hated RA in the dorms:
You've never posted on this server before, don't make up bullshit about your password. Even after I help provide the entire campus with this great pizza deal, you're only out looking to bust someone in case they got some small change out of a deal. I'll tell you now so no other tools ask me, no they didn't pay me any money, it was just to give the students a good deal.
I think it's a cool idea. I even think it would be cool if Ryan got paid. Most jackasses can't even comprehend the kind of work it would take to build/run Seek42.
I like the non-obtrusive manner in which it was brought to my attention. But if you even think about posting ads with a popup/popunder, I'll personnaly kick your ass with a lead pipe. Those things get on my nerves worse than anything else on the great WWW. Whoever first thought of them should be shot.

I agree with both parts of that. I know if i was him, i'd be expecting money for all the business it is bringing them.
bigfattitty, you can build me a computer if you want. I wont even charge you.

The ad was definitely a good thing. Like PizzaGuy said, as long as you use discretion, it would be a very helpful addition to the sire. You might also have a section of the forum devoted to feedback on the ads you've chosen to run and suggestions for types of ads to run in the future. On a side note, how does the "quote" feature work?
