So, I see a university copy car, 2 rolla cop cars, an ambulance and a fire truck all in the parking lot between RC1 and RC2. We saw the paramedics walking (not running) into RC2. Anyone have any idea what's going on?
It's on the third floor on the short wing. Rumor has it that someone fell off of their loft kit. I walked by the room where it happened and it smelled of vomit... I asked a cop what was going on, and he said it was an ongoing investigation and that he couldn't say anything else.
ROLLA, Mo. -- A 19-year-old student at Missouri University of Science and Technology was pronounced dead Thursday evening, the result of an apparent suicide. Ian T. Willand, a freshman in electrical engineering from Eureka, Mo., was found dead in his room in Residential College Building 2. The discovery was reported to 911 at approximately 7 p.m. Thursday, May 8. The death is currently under investigation by the University Police and Rolla Police Department. Students, faculty and staff members may contact the Missouri S&T Counseling Center at 573-341-4211.

Not to say this was the cause, but maybe now some instructors will actually consider the ridiculous workload they dump on students at the last minute.
yea not to jump the gun and bring up the story about the kid that locked himself in his room or whatever and had a breakdown from finals and thats why you can move a final if you have 3 in a day...but could possibly be related to the non-existent 'dead-week' here at umr with teachers giving that last test . very unfortunate though .
edit: the story i was thinking of was zeus , i dont know if that had anything to do w. locking himself in his room though

out of respect, let's not sit and speculate about specifics. I mean, really.
I find it very hard to respect anyone that commits suicide.

I'm good friends with two of the guy's suitemates. While the police were in the suite investigating, they both hung out in my room.
One of my friends saw the scene, before they were kicked out of the room. To clear things up:
It was a suicide, yes. He hanged himself with a belt in his closet.
Cops came in, did their work, and my friends were back in their room about four hours after the matter. To be honest, I'd rather not say anything else. But I wanted to at least get the story straight before rumors spread and the story was perverted beyond recognition. I guess that's just my way of showing respect? *shrugs*

Its not really just the tests though, Its the insane amount of class projects that are due. Im not sure what major he was, but the aero department really likes to cram as many projects in at the last minute as they can.

While this may be true, keep in mind this guy was a freshman. Most likely courses are IDE 20, Calc 1 or 2, maybe an Intro to EE class, and Phys 24.
IDE 20 projects were due weeks ago, Calc final and Physics final would give some stress, but that's about it. I vote he had other shit going on in his life that he didn't want to go home to.
I agree with mad duck. There's many things that factor into a suicide. It's very tragic. I think our counseling center on campus should be promoted more. Maybe it wouldn't have helped him, but it could have made a difference (however, I didn't know him, so maybe he did go get help...). I'm just aware many people who need help never go and get it.
