What's wrong with them? Specifically, what professor?

It isn't really an individual professor, it is a plague that the department suffers from. My degree is Engineering, not History. History, while essential to avoid repeating past mistakes, and may provide some insight to future shortcuts in certain processes, is not overly essential to the job an engineer does. It is my belief that many of the professors in the department know that a VAST MAJORITY of the students at MS&T know that, and it gives them an inferiority complex, or a chip on their shoulder, or something else psychotic to the point that they make it as fucking impossible to pass the damn class as is in their ability. Here are some examples that are not necessarily from my current class:

Rolla is a LONG (especially with gas prices what they were at the time) way from home for me and I am supposed to interview a Vietnam veteran for 25% of my grade. It can't be just any vet either. As if it isn't already difficult enough for most of the living vets to discuss already, especially with a stranger, and I DON'T KNOW ANY IN THE AREA! I can't interview him about just anything either, the topic was very specific, and if the vet didn't know much about it, I had to find ANOTHER ONE!

I study for 3 days, at the expense of my performance in other classes, to pass the second test, and I go in more prepared than ever before, and I get a lower grade than the first exam. I am supposed to memorize exact dates, examples, etc. for a test. I can convey the basic ideas behind the arguement, and firmly establish my point, and i still fail. Bullshit.

I am hoping I can at least get a D for done in this class, then I will never have to visit that department again. This isn't built off of one instance, or one professor, or one class, it is a general impression I have gotten after nearly touring the entire department.

History is, at best, a hobby for me. It is not essential for me to do well in an engineering job. The fact that I am working harder in this class than ALL of my other engineering classes combined, and am getting a lower grade in this class than any of my other classes speaks volumes to me about how that department feels it needs to treat its students. I am appalled and insulted.

You know, I'm really interested that you get this impression. As a former Engineering major-turned History major-turned going into Engineering after all, I (ironically) have to say that the History department has prepared me far better for my intended job than the Engineering department could have ever dreamed. I'd be curious to know who the professor is that you're getting these grades from, because I've never had an experience like that, and I've been through 8-9 History classes here. Are you in Dr. McManus' Vietnam class? I've had several of his classes and never had a problem with him allowing me to interview whichever veteran I've wanted. I'd like to know the circumstances under which this predicament arose.

While I've had professors in the history department that do what you to realize that they're classes have an important place in an MS&T education, I've never encountered one that had an "inferiority complex" and asserted that their classes were that important, nor have I ever encountered those that will make their classes tougher for engineering students. That's just absurd.

Name some names, and then maybe I can start to understand, but as someone who's had 90% of the professors in the department, what you're saying sounds like complete bullshit.

Wow Berto, thanks for the useless post. I didn't know he would have had to have ALL of the history professors to make an informed judgment.

Had you actually thought about my post, I was clearly making the statement that he's only had ~90% of the professors according to his statistics. I'm not an expert with numbers or anything, but I was only pointing out that he had not had 100% of the professors in the history department so while it may _sound_ like complete bullshit, who is he to say what experience a student has with a professor at S&T sounds like bullshit not having all the professors?

To reiterate my assertion, not all professors are not rainbows and sunshine to EVERY student and they also change their curriculum from time to time as well. That post could've been made without saying ShadowCat's situation sounded like bullshit.

Next time think before you try insulting my posting ability.

Every single one of my history classes has revolved around "Rote Learning" I hate those kinds of classes, you never walk away from them remembering anything once your done with the classes.

You need to take a class with Dr. Meagher.
