I get a lot of weird people sending me email, but this guy takes the cake. This is after he sent me 3 large emails explaining to me how hubs and switches work.

------------------------------------

Ok for one YES TJ , The quad and some (few) fraternities are on a switched
network others are still operating a HUB based Network. Yes even though you
might not be sharing a file if others on the HUB based networking does then
that degrades our network to crap.

"Basically all I have to say about this is that we have a fully switched
network and that when you copy a file to your computer you're only slowing
down your own individual connection. Contrary to the infinte wisdom of Meg
Brady, sharing files does not slow down internet access"

--> For one that is crap and you know it ..... I hope to god you never come
out of Rolla with an degree with any type of networking infrastructure.

"As has always been, nothing involved with Seek42 is slowing down internet
access. If nothing else, Seek42 improves internet access by reducing the
need to download files from the internet that are already residing on your
neighbor's computer."

--> So you do support piracy !!! (what I can tell you do)

"When CIS mentions servers slowing down internet access they are (or should
be) referring to public FTP servers that people run off of the resnet
ethernet. These FTPs provide mass amounts of data to people outside UMR via
our only internet line. These servers are slowing things down and causing
CIS to implement limits on our bandwidth. Please encourage people to stop
running public FTP's or refer them to me for alternative encouragement."

--> So you are going to head the public ftping of people in the Res halls?
If anything else you are saying hey if you want to share pirated software to
outside people Talk to you and you will hook them up .... If they are at all
smart then they know they can ftp into Rocket and get the files off their
accounts and also ftp into the tmp in rocket and get anything in it (You
should know that).

Thanks for supporting Seek42 --> after realizing that you will be graduating
from UMR I have decided all support I had for Seek 42 is now down the tubes
with your complete lack of any networking intelligence. Might as well take
me off from being able to even access Seek 42( I would greatly appreciate
it)...

That was the most retarded thing i have ever read, with the exception of iliekmilk...but that was funny. This was not.

This moron ASSUMES that everyone pirates. Access to files on the network is a simple as a game demo, or any other type of free software.

For example, the demo for red faction on the pc is almost 100 megs. It is much easier to get it off the network than to download it. And by easier I mean by minutes...

Argh, i dont need to convince you guys....

Oh I didn't realize he worked for CIS. That does explain why he thinks he knows what he is talking about. Something tells me he is probably good friends with "dumbass Dan" from CIS. Good observation Guest.

Well this guy seems to exemplify the total lack of intellect that CIS is known for... all I can say is that we don't have to wonder why our network sucks when we see the people responsible for maintaining sending such untintelligent garbled misinformation.

Misinformation abounds!!!

First he is NOT responsible for your network. There are 3 people at CIS in charge of the network, and he isn't one of them. Learn your facts first, bud.

Second, the network sucks only because of the extreme loading that all the file sharing is causing. nuff said. It worked really great for those of us who remained here over the weekend while others went home. Just shows that it is load dependent.

Forgive me oh great one! I had no idea that CIS has NOTHING WHATSOEVER TO DO WITH THE NETWORK.... wait a minute... YOU ARE SMOKING CRACK YOU MORON OF COURSE CIS HELPS WITH THE NETWORK YOU FOOL! Get YOUR facts straight and then explain to me why all this "massive file sharing" that is occuring at lower rates than it did last year (no off campus and also less ftp servers).... let me state that again... why has LESS FILE SHARING TRAFFIC resulted in the internet being ONE THIRD OF THE SPEED OF LAST YEAR? could it possibly be that CIS HAS CAPPED US UNNECCISSARILY even though we are PAYING THE SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY and they have EXPANDED BANDWITDTH? hmmmm might just be... and maybe if CIS wasn't so INEPT about configuring the network (IE bunching the dorms and frats all into one arm) then internal file sharing would take exactly ZERO bandwidth from anybody's function outside of the dorms and frats. maybe if they would be smart enough to finish putting in switches instead of hubs in the few places there are, nearly all problems would go away. any idiot knows that for networks with many active computers switches are vastly superior. why hasn't CIS done that instead of adding a second uplink to the net which will probably cost many times more $$$?

btw if you think file sharing is so evil, what are you even doing on seek42? HYPOCRITE! I have personally had conversations with more than one CIS person who has bitched about how seek 42 supposedly "slows everything down" then asked them if they had ever used it, their response is invariably "i use it all the time" HYPOCRITES HYPOCRITES HYPOCRITES
