Manuals are fun, but transmissions are entirely unnecessary in EV's. :(

Do people with manuals take the cars on long road trips where more than one person will drive. One of things I like is that anybody can drive my car. If i do not feel like driving (be it i am tired, drunk, or need a break), I can ask a passenger to take my car. My housemate can't on the other hand.

Also, winter shouldn't be an issue. ABS, good tires, and not being an idiot should be more than enough to keep you safe. I drive an auto, and think I will until I get a legacy gt. Don't know how a turbo with an auto would feel.

Driving a manual in winter is a little safer if you don't have ABS. It's alot easier to use engine breaking to slow the car down w/o locking up the tires. Your wheels are still spinning so you are still able to avoid obstacles.

If you're driving in a condition where you actually want the wheels to lock (deep snow) because the tires dig in faster - you should probably be driving like a saint anyway, and won't have to worry about the slightly increased braking distance. An ABS equipped vehicle is far safer in other conditions - even if you think you're one of those drivers who doesn't need it because you're just that amazing of a driver, you probably do.

edit: and just to pre-empt the people who's manhood I've hurt by claiming that they're not as good as ABS:

-You can't detect a wheel slipping as fast as ABS sensors can;
-You can't brake wheels individually;
-The typical car does not offer enough pedal feedback to effectively threshold brake;
-You can't pump the brakes as fast as ABS can;
-People in a panic situation will make mistakes, no matter how well they're trained;
-Even in the snow, sliding until snow piles up in front of your wheels is risky and dangerous. It is better to maintain control so you can avoid obstacles, despite the longer stopping distance.

Even so, ABS isn't infallible. So many people overdrive their vehicle's stopping capability because they incorrectly assume that ABS is like their silver bullet. All it does is help you keep from locking up your wheels. It's not a magic super-stopper, and it won't save you from having an accident if you still drive like an idiot.

Neither my first car('89 camaro) not my new car ('94 subaru) have ABS braking. I need to know how to drive my car in case the tires do lock up. I'm not saying at all I'm better than ABS cause I know I'm not. But if you don't have ABS, you need to be really careful in bad weather and really know the limits of your vehicle.

A good point. They've done studies on that too - i think that taxi drivers in NY or something... Anyhow, the studies they did it on showed that drivers who routinely handle their cars as aggressively as possible (taxi drivers) got in the same rate of collisions because the drivers were aware that ABS would help them stop shorter and thus drove more aggressively.

+1. I know people who drive big ass trucks and SUVs, and think because their car has 4WD, ABS, TCS, ESC and a bunch of other acronyms that they can drive on ice covered roads like it's a racetrack and nothing bad will happen, and they're always the ones that end up crashing their car in bad weather. All of those systems certainly do help, and there have most definitely been times in the winter when I'm glad my car has ABS and TCS, but no amount of safety systems will fix stupidity.

On a related note, what's the best way to get going from a stop in a manual in the snow and ice? I've had good luck with shifting as soon as I possibly can to limit the power to the wheels which seems to make sense, but I don't really know if that's the right way to do it. I know some people say to start from a stop in 2nd gear in the snow, but whenever I've done that, I've felt like I'm slipping my clutch for way too long to avoid a stall and am burning it up, so I start in 1st like normal and shift to 2nd as soon as I'm moving.

i would start in second, its not that hard to do

and tcs is not good when you get stuck or are about to get stuck, the engine will cut power. My focus has it, but to disengage you have to be full on the break, which means you are already stuck.

Most cars have a Traction Control button don't they?

ABS is not to stop your car sooner. ABS is to keep the car from sliding while braking. Thus you can avoid the car in front of you.

And TCS is useful for keeping a car in traction, but if you are on a sheet of ice, trying to go up hill., it will not allow for the wheels to spin. Which can be useful if you have people behind you trying to push you up...Scott may know something about this.

Most do. I know my GTI does, but supposedly, in Volkswagens, turning TCS off doesn't really fully turn it off, it'll just raise the tolerance for wheel spin before it kicks in. I don't know if that's true or not, I've never had a reason to turn it off in my car.

Exactly - most of these people don't seem to realize that having 4WD / AWD doesn't allow them to stop any sooner- it just keeps them from getting stuck where a Civic or Focus would.

not exactly, it will help a person steer where others would slide. Though most dont know how to use it correctly

I happy my new car AWD. No more getting stuck trying to get out of TJ lot. Damn plows. They clear 63, but leave about 2 ft of piled up snow blocking the parking lots.
