When you print though, doesn't it send your entire job to the queue, where it eventually gets printed from? How will it know how many pages, if any, got printed.
Also, this would appear to be trying to combat an administrative issue with a technological solution. If someone is abusing the system, they should pay for it - the solution shouldn't be to force a something onto everyone.
When you print instead of it going to the default queue as we have now it goes to the new system which you can cancel from. But the problem still exists. How do you accurately track abuse and prevent it? By setting amounts that shouldn't prevent anyone from printing school work but should prevent people from abusing the system. Behavioural aspects alone average around a 30% reduction in printing based on awareness of monitoring and accountability.
Why should we continue to spend money on wasteful printing when it can be used in a way that can better benefit the students, such as upgrading CLCs.
Random fact: In six months campus printed over 2 million pages.

You should assume any money saved will actually go to anything useful. It will probably just be used for SUB to get more concerts or something. They planted like a gajillion flowers so they could take pictures for a screensaver, don't tell me that money couldn't have been used on a new CLC.

Kinda off topic, but w/e. I talked to some of the groundskeepers once. They said that university purposely plants flowers and such that only last a few weeks. Then they dig them up and plant new ones. That seems like a big waste of money. Why not plant flowers that last for a few months or even the entire spring/summer season.

Wrong. Very wrong. Completely different budgets. The money WILL go towards improving CLCS

Yes they pull them up but they save the bulbs to be planted again.

That is still a lot of money lost in wasted labor, assuming theoretically they don't have to purchase new bulbs for flowers, which they will because I know they aren't all saved.

We need a grounds crew and sometimes there isn't work to do, but in order for the university to keep workers you have to give them work to do. It is no different anywhere else

Improving CLCs? Like the CLCs in Engr. Mgmt... that are behind card swipes... that only open for Engr. Mgmt students? Wtf is up with that?
Or the CLC in Centennial Hall... that has the Java IDE(Netbeans), but no means to compile a java program (JDK)?

We appreciate your contact us with this request. However, we need to have a faculty sponsor to make requests like this and it needs to be tied to an instructional use.
Yes, the CLC has everything you need to write and run a java program EXCEPT for the actual compiler. Why should a faculty sponsor be needed for something like this? How is the premier technological institute of Missouri supposed to innovate and lead the way into new technologies when its IT department is so grossly incompetent and weighted down by bureaucratic bullshit that it can't even get the compiler onto a standard image for which the IDE and runtime environment is already installed?
Furthermore, if we can't trust IT to get something as simple as the Java issue correct, how or why should we trust them to correctly implement and maintain a printer restriction system?

Yes, because choosing the actions of one small group accurately represents the actions of the entire organization. Take a guess at how many different distinct software packages there are for campus. Over 300. Sorry if they forgot one little package amongst the thousands. This can be simplified by upgrading groups of CLCs together. This way maybe we can upgrade some of the 125 computers in 15 locations that cant run Office 2007 or possibly some of the 300 that wouldnt be able to run Vista. Also, by the end of 2009 approximately 25 of 45 CLCs will contain computers with expired warranties. So to answer your final question, a) because that is the responsibility of one group of people where this is pulling in members from all of IT and even groups outside of IT b) because you know nothing of the actual implementation and c) because you can't argue with stupid (berto cop out).

Sorry, I'm just not a fan of IT. If everyone were Karl, then I'd be a fan of IT. But our IT department can't afford a building full of Karls... so unfortunately we see the things the Karls work on flourish while everything else goes to hell.

So what, you'd rather they all just plant...perennials? That bloom once for about two weeks, in the summer, while you're gone, and look like shit the rest of the time? That sure makes a statement about the campus.

Agreed. I think we actually have a fairly nice looking campus. Once the construction site / eyesore is gone it will be very nice.
The construction will never be gone, it'll just move to another site. IDE and Schrenk are due up for renovations or razing, and if things go at the pace that they have for the last 6 years, they will do one building at a time, taking 2 years per building, and by the time they are finished with the actually old buildings on campus, the "new" ones (i.e. EECH and McNutt) will need renovations again. It is a never-ending process that is exacerbated by the slowest contractors in the world.

We do have really really slow progress on buildings here. RC2 went up fairly quickly, but at Mizzou they started a dorm like the rescollege in the middle of campus. It was started (iirc) around September. It was open for residents this January.
As far as I'm concerned, Toomey isn't done till the walkway is open. And that's been closed... for what, 3 years?
