How to Access STAR through Windows XP

Problem:
Because of the lawsuit between Sun Microsystems and Microsoft, Microsoft had to discontinue availability of it's Java Virtual Machine. If you have a recent install of Microsoft Windows XP, this is bad because the Java Virtual Machine provided by Microsoft does not come preinstalled and is not available for download, making STAR access via the IBM Host On Demand (accessed through http://www.umr.edu/~regwww/star.html) unavailable.

Solution:
First you need to download and install the Tn3270 emulator the UMR Helpdesk provides at:

http://www.umr.edu/~helpdesk/ware/softw ... 03.4.2.exe

Next, open "My Computer", select "Tools" from the pull down menu, and then select "Folder Options." Click on the "File Types" tab and give your computer a few seconds to load all known file types. Click on the "New" button to create a new file extension. In the "File Extension" field, type "URL:TN3270" (without the quotes). Click on the "Advanced" button, and then click on the "Associated File Types" pull down. Scroll down and select the "URL:TN3270 Protocol." Click "OK" to add this file type. Click on the "Advanced" button, select "Open", and then click on "Edit". Click on "Browse" and select your QWS3270 Plus program file (qws3270p.exe, located in its install directory). Click "OK", click "OK" again, click "Apply" and then "Close" to leave the Folder Options window. Finally, type this into your address bar or create a shortcut on your desktop to it.

tn3270://ummvsb.umsystem.edu/

Enjoy access to STAR again through Windows XP!

The link provided for the tn3270 client does not work.

The file is located at: http://web.umr.edu/~helpdesk/ware/softw ... _3.4.2.exe
