I've been using this machine for a few years now, started out with 98, and have used just about every MS release and a couple of linux releases since. Problem: 98 has decided since my recent hardware upgrades that it doesn't like to run, and win2k can't seem to run any games. (everything else is pretty much okay, though. Anybody got any ideas, suggestions, or I told you so's? I'd like some help, l've gotten so frustrated l'm about ready to migrate to Mac, hardware and all. Thanks,
Diesel

not to jump all over you again quamosity, but i am suprised anybody even suggested WinME.....it is one of the worst operating systems out there, do NOT resort to it.
As for games in Win2k...what kind of games are you trying to play? Unless they are old dos games everything should run just fine.
...and i knew pretty much going in that someone would disagree with me. Its ok, though. I just recently built a new system and installed winme on it, had some issues with it, and then switched back to 98. 98 however seemed to want to fuck everything up...I had more trouble with 98 than ME.
diesel, why don't you start off by listing your system specs. might help us out. I had a similar problem, and chose to build a seperate computer for work, running win2k, and kept my old system for play, dual booting 98 and linux.
Just my $0.02

Well, sys specs, . . .
AMD K6-2 550MHz
256 MB PC-133 DIMMS
Epox MVP3G-M motherboard
(current clock speed 112MHz, 5 multiplier)
Video: ATI All in Wonder 128-Pro
Network: LinkSys LNE110TX
40 MB WD ATA 100 HDD
20 MB WD Maxtor ATA 66 HDD
I've tried WinME with varying degrees of success. It seems like some days 9x just doesn't want to run. 2k seems to be okay except that I frequently get the stop errors "KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED" and "UNEXPECTED_KERNEL [something weird, l don't recall]" when running video or audio editing or extensive 3D and sometimes 2D apps. It doesn't like just about any game from StarCraft to Black & White. (In case you're wondering, it's not B&W's CD audio access bug.)
So, I've given you guys a few more clues. Any suggestions? I've got a buddy with the corporate "No-Tattle" version of XP. I'll probably install it this Saturday. That and the Power Mac I just picked up should help matters, too. At least I'll be able to play StarCraft again. Anyone want some Zerg cannon fodder to satiate a losing streak?

I had to get an ATA 100 card just to get the 40G HDD in there to work! Then again, I do have IDE spots for 8 devices now. Hmm..., let's see, 5 HDD's, 2 Burners, and a DVD drive. That means I'll also need to get another power supply to boost me up around 400 watts. Or, I could rig up a SECOND power supply for the extra electricity requirements, . . .
Good thing I found that server case the other day. This thing could get totally whacked by the time it's done with.
Does anyone know if there are Linux drivers for the Orchid Technologies Pro Designer 2S? I found that in the server case. I also found a dual-pentium board with 2 P-133's in it. No ram, though, and all 72-pin slots.
