So I was trying to rip American Pie 2 for Assclown, and I realized that all the DVD ripping programs I could find would only encode like 5-30 minutes of the DVD until you bought it or cracked it.
What's a good one I can use that's free? Or, a good very expensive one that I can use with a crack? I'm trying to rip it to .avi, but if it supports ripping to .mpeg2 that would be very nice as well.
Thanks.

There are a lot of programs for conversion to .avi, some free (though not very legal) others not. The issue is MPEG2 is a copyrighted encoder/decoder so a legal one must be paid for. I use use my own combinaton of decoders. I use SmartRipper for the rip, DVD2AVI and AVISynth for Video, VOBSub for Subititles, and either VirtualDub or TMPGEnc for the final encode.
GordianKnot isn't too bad, and has all the software you'll need.

i use DVDx when i rip stuff. You can just encode straight off the DVD if you'd like as long as you know which .IFO and .VOB files are for the full movie. i have it shared on my computer if you wanna grab that and give it a shot. its on the DVD Copy Plus ISO (\\sackchaser\Shared\ISO). you dont have to install all the little programs taht are available on the dvd. I also have some misc. encoding/ripping/editing tools you can find here: \\sackchaser\F\dvdstuff. When selecting a codec, i'd suggest the DivX low-motion.
EDIT: PM me if you end up needing a bit of help getting around the program.
Holy shit! I totally forgot about DVD Copy Plus! I fucking bought that program last year (January 2003) over X-Mas break because I wanted to burn movies to VCDs and watch them on my DVD player. It wasn't until later that I found out my DVD player doesn't support VCDs... But it supports SVCDs. I figured out how to make those in May.
And yeah, I ripped the movie using DVD Decoder (from GordianKnot) and then encoded it with DVD2AVI... Unfortunately there was no fucking sound. I guess I gotta check a couple other settings?
