speaking of which, is it normal not to get the full speed out of the bus? I'm only getting ~50 meg/sec on my ata 100 hard drive.

A drive's rating is the burst transfer speed, usually for the 2 to 8 megs of data held in the drive's cache. Normal usage will be less, especially since there's no way most drives can read or write a hundred-plus megs a second.
