The net here in the Palace is, believe it or not, worse than the net I got at TJ or Altman last year. I can't ping a single server under 150ms, and I download at about 50kbps. Keep in mind, this is before everyone's even done moving in. Is it that bad in TJ/Quad right now? Anyone know anything about the connection at the Palace? I have a 192.168 IP, so my best guess is that we have a 100mb link to a router here in the building or something.. shared between however many rooms there are here.

Edit: Forgot to mention that I had to use VPN in order to even view the seek front page. Denied connection/no permission otherwise.

Update: Pings keep getting worse. Now my lowest ping to any d3 server is 240.

I wasn't trying to. I have it set so my VPN isn't my gateway anyway.. so if I'm on vpn it doesn't affect my net.

I was in the Palace last year.

It works like this...The network is wired to a 48-port switch (doesn't much matter, there are only 39 outlets anyway) internally. The switch is proxied to a (at least last year it was a) 3 Mb down/1.5 Mb upstream cable connection through Fidelity in Rolla.

I preferred this setup because 1) most of the time, the download speeds rivaled or surpassed UMRIT's best Resnet connections, and 2) you're not connected to Resnet (i.e. no DMCA violations...:D )

Granted, this provides a really bad ping, so you just get creamed on Unreal Tournament...but I think it's good for everything else.

ONE asset that you have is a 100 Mb network internal to the Palace. This is EXCELLENT for a Palace LAN party...Try it, it's great.

Wow. 3mbit for 39 machines. That's not good. Going to have to look into getting our own cable line in here. Lan parties are fine, but I'd rather play with pro-level players online than play with newbies (assuming there are no amazing incoming freshmen in this building) on lan.

I've never had too much of a problem with the download speeds...and as far as ping, yes it's there, but the Palace guys last year played turn-based games like Ragnarok and, what's that one that's Korean and plays just like Worms? Anyway, they played the heck out of those. and their connection was just fine.

You'll find that download speeds fluctuate greatly between not only the in-house traffic (which is only really bad when 10 people decide they need a movie off Seek all at the same time), but also the city traffic. City traffic tends to peak at midday and at 7:00-9:00 pm..but in reality it doesn't change a whole lot.

Gunbound is the game you're thinking of.

I tend to take my games more seriously than the average gamer, though. Like I play games to compete.. I don't enjoy wasting my time away on some game for fun half as much as I enjoy improving my skills at a game and playing against pro-level players in order to do so. There's no way I can improve at Doom3 now, which I have been playing at home for a few weeks relatively hardcore.

Btw, my roommate was unable to download new video drivers any faster than 5kbps. And our web browsing it taking literally a full minute to load each page. It's God-awful.

Hmm...Since you're only there as temps, they might have "upgraded" you to the cheaper 512k d/256k u line. I think that's how we started last year. I'dve thought that they'd just go back to what worked the first time, but apparently not.
