Hey Guys,

Have any of you had an intel cpu that you could overclock by adjsuting the CPU multiplier in the BIOS? THey say these processors are enginnering samples, and I wonder if any decent overclocking board would bring up the CPU mult. changing option if you plugged the thing in. I wonder....

Any ideas?

yes, they exist...but are kinda hard to get to.

yes, you could OC them by just upping the multiplier, but that won't give you the best OC. Up the FSB.

Are you looking for a Intel ES?

Yep, I could use one, if anyone's got a spare. Might be time for an upgrade....

Hah, good luck finding one. And if you do, prepare to pay around $450-500 for a 2.8 or so.

And I should add that if you do find one, chances are it's already been through a harsh amount of testing/overclocking. Who knows how much longer one will last.

Thx for the reply, got a line on a 2.6/512/400fsb P4 the guy claims is an ES, but I'm checking it out.

Well even if you do get that chip, it's not going to be just a simple thing to crank up the multi on it. Better get some phase change, like a vapochill or something.

Are we talking about different cooling here? I'm planning on putting together a watercooled system, maybe. I want to crank this thing up.

You got a pelt with that watercooling? If you're talking about reaching speeds of 4.0+, you'll more than likely have to have temps below 0 degrees C.

Haven't quite decided, but it's definitely going to have to be good. Maybe the compressor off of an old fridge would be the best route....

It just depends on how far you want to take it. Sure you can take it to 3.4 easily on good air/water, but if you want to absolutely top it out, phase change is the way to go. A vapochill unit is like $800 if memory serves me correctly. You'll probably have to volt mod several things on your mobo too, if your BIOS doesn't allow high enough voltages of course.

In my humble opinion…You are wasting your money on an ES for OC. For the chip, the water cooling/phase change and the kick ass mother board you are going to need, you could get a 6800, a M 2600 XP, and a reasonable mobo but still have all your over clocking giggles but have a nice gaming machine too. If you want to OC intel past the reasonable price point of the cooling (2.6 to 3.4) you are not looking at the best trade off in stability.

Do you think the option to change multiplier will appear in my bios when I install an ES processor?

No, you will most likely need a new bios and or mother board.
