i've got my S drive networked through \\samba-server.umr.edu\account and would now like to network my research drive. why won't it let me? i've tried both \\samba-server.umr.edu\account and \\samba\account

my first guess would be that you have done it wrong. my second guess would be that you are on VPN and samba might be blocked. do you have client for MS networks installed?
did you try
\\samba01.cc.umr.edu\joeminer
\\samba02.cc.umr.edu\joeminer
did you give it your username and pass.
you might have to tell it connect as a different username.
