I could be wrong, but wouldn't CS be having a longer shelf life because its been out longer?? I'm not too sure of the release date. And it'll most likely outlive Halo, because Halo 2 is coming out. But Halo was the fastest 1-million copy video game to this date! Didn't see CS doing that ;)

It's hard to trace the "sales" of CS, because it has always been a free mod for half-life. IMO, tracking HL sales would be more accurate.

Although the thread title grabbed me, the initial post was disappointing. Won't keep me from mentioning this:

There's also the fact that CS is one of the most populated (non MMO) games online at any given time (it's up there, ranking close to the entire battle.net system).
It's now midnight, and the server count is over 18,000. Of course some will be empty, some wil be full, and some will have a bad latency. But after adding filters to take care of those issues, you still have more than 360 favorable games to choose from!

That much activity with a game that's been around as long as it has is really saying something...

t0aster is right. Last I checked, Counter-Strike was the most popular online multiplayer game. At any given point in time, it will beat any other online game. Maybe not the entire battle.net system, but it'll beat Diablo II or WarCraft III, etc.

And it's really sad when UrLocalGuru is giving out English advice. You got fucking hosed, man.

What does it really matter when there are games that are better than both anyway? Like Tetris.

Yeah honestly that's the most abserd statement i've ever heard. How do you track something that's free and downloads from hundreds of places over the internet.

It's the 21st century. There's a way to track anything.

ok, then you go track how many times cs has been downloaded...
Wait, since there's a way to track anything, why dont you track how many times cs has been INSTALLED! Since there seems to be a way to tracking everything

Right so round up all the mirrors and all the official download site to get an audit of CS downloads. Then round up every person who gacked it off their friend at a lanparty. Take all those number from beta 3 lets say to now.(1.6) When you're done go percolate that in a corner, because more copies of CS have been distributed than Halo ... no question But if you want to track fastest to 1 million. Take 1.6 and track how long it took for 1 million copies to get passed around. Then ram nails into your penis because CS beat Halo on that hands down.

you'd have to collect logs from all webservers that has ever served the cs install files. Not only that, but you'd have to collect them from over the past 4 (is it 4?) years. This is impossible seeing as how most logs get deleted every few weeks, and even more impossible when other webservers go down or get reformatted. And no, there is nothing up my ass, I just find it funny when someone makes a claim like that when it's obviously impossible to do, obvious unless you're mr. dc "elite".
