Post subject: A technical essay on the evolution of counter strike

It has been almost one month since the demise of counter-strike 1.5. Some of were super hardcore because we were playing on a 1.5 serVER AND WHILER wer were on valve took down its WON authentication servers. So some of us with sucky internet disconnected to restart our puters and get a better ping but because the auth. servers were down we couldn't get back in. It was a roller coaster weekend because valve took them down and put them back up over and over in a race against time. But by August they were all dead and you were forced to stop playing counter strike or you had to upgrade to STEAM. Now if you've been playing counter strike for quite some time, the idea of content delivery prolly will mess you up. The beauty of counter strike 1.5 was how it was super rough around the edges; people really into counter strike were not quite ready for the game to become so polished.

Anyway in august you had to pretty much jump on the bandwagon or give up counter strike. So say you decided to upgrade to counter strike 1.6...first of all it is completely different because you have to log into steam with an account on TOP of having your own CD key...I don't know about that...but anyway after a big ordeal of figuring stuff out you finally get steam set up. The big difference is instead of going right to counter strike, you set up a "play games" thing and you download the game you want to play. Its weird..in the end it is prolly more efficient but we can all agree that its like getting the wind knocked out of you. BIG surprise...things are realy different.

Anyways...aside from the fact that our counter strike world is poretty much turned upside down, there are many differences to distinuginsn 1.5 from 1.6. Now i could go into detail about weapons and shields and all that but that would waste everyones time and no one wants to hear about it.

The BIG difference is in the FY maps. It used to be people mostly played fy_iceworld and then there was some fy_pool_day and fy_snow and some others but now it seems like ther eare a lot more. Because in steam you can search as you type...so typign fy in the seach box gives you lots of maps whereas you just had to know the name of your map in 1.5. And you only found that out from your friends or the web. Now theres all sorts of fy maps.

Didn't know they shut off the WON AUTH servers...can you still put the dedicated server into no-master/LAN mode?

Yes, you can still set up a 1.5 server and tell it not to authenticate with the WON servers.

1.5 had an assload of fy_ maps. If you ever visited gametiger.net you could find plenty of fy_maps along with server/player info.

1.5>>1.6 and I died a little on the inside when 1.5 was slain.

how is that an essay? And how is the change from 1.5 to 1.6 the "evolution of counter-strike" ?? I've been playing this game since beta 5.2 and i've never written a "technical essay" about it due to version changes. Also, what kind of essay is only 4 paragraphs long and wanders off getting lost about fy_maps? I'm sorry that you've had to adjust and adapt, but it's not that hard, it's a game (and a free one at that).

well said heretic^. While I haven't been playing as long as heretic^(I started on 1.3), I would have to say that this complaining is really kind of ridiculous. I mean, my transition to STEAM was pretty seamless. I installed the client. I created my account. I ran the updates. In an hour I was ready to go; end of story. So you see, I really don't understand what all the fuss is about.

i finally broke down and bought the game when i discovered i couldn't play with a generated CD key any more. i installed steam, and hey! i can download free games like "Codename Gordon." i think steam isn't half bad. course, i've only been playing CS since 2000, and didn't get my own computer until 2002. i took about a year long hiatus from the relatively static CS, and when i started again (with steam) i was surprised. it seemed better, but then again i never played 1.5 so i can't compare it.

p.s. may not be a direct quote but I can never remeber the whole thing... you get the point though

I have to admit, that was pretty bad. I agree with heretic

anyway, I didn't like having to use steam at first; basically because it didn't work quite right for the first month. Now it works fine except for the occasional friends list goof up.

I think I'll go make a horribly incoherent post about how I make my bed and how its not as good since I got that new comforter. I'm sure that would be as neccesary as this post. While I'm at it, I'll go ahead and replace letters in my name with vaguely similar looking numbers.

On second thought...I don't want to be an asshole fagshit.
