Check this out:

When the N64 first came out, it had the low low price of $199.99.
You can now purchase it for $14.99.

What's better, the games are sometimes more expensive than the consloe.

Console: $15
Zelda OofT: $35
Mario 64: $17
Mario Party 2: $20
Preowned Controler: $15

The rest of the games are between 5 and 10 dollars, but were fifty bucks when they came out.

I think this is the time to buy an N64 if you want one. soon they are going to become 'antique' sytems, like the NES and Atari. It will be hard to find a console, and they will get more expensive as the supply decreases. I bought one when it was $25, and I am pretty happy with it. Its nice to take a break from Halo and play a bit of goldeneye every once in a while.

Yeah, the 64 was a pretty decent console. Nintendo's fear of piracy got the best of them though, when they limited the true power of their hardware by sticking with a failing cartridge format.

For those prices though...I think you got ripped, if that's the price that you paid on some of them. $15 for the console is an excellent deal, but $35 for OOT is absurd. You can get that in most stores for $10, and the going ebay price is about $5. Maybe add on $5-$10 for a complete copy. I'd say Mario 64 has a going price of $10 as well, unless you go to thrift stores/garage sales. I picked mine up for $.50 recently. It all just depends on how much you shop around.

The N64 is definitely a cheap collectors system, very few of the games go for over $30 now. The only ones that can come to mind for me are Paper Mario (~$35) and Ogre Battle (~$60). Whereas almost every other system has $100+ titles. The NES is probably the worst. The three Panesian games fetch $300-$800 every time. The myriad 6-in-1 cart can easily go over $1000 for a complete copy. And a mint copy of the gold Nintendo World Championships cart can fetch >$5000. Those games are the reason I'll never own a complete NES set.

I suppose the Neo Geo AES is just as bad, but those games retailed at a ridiculous price in the first place. People complained about the $60-$70 price tag of new N64 games, but $550 for Samurai Shodown V when it first came out is a tad bit worse.

Anyways, for some N64 reccomendations:
Blast Corps is a very fun game. Kind of a driving/puzzle/destroy everything game. Definitely nothing like it.

Paper Mario is VERY solid RPG, that definitely warrants the price, especially if you liked Super Mario RPG.

Mario Kart 64 was a great game. You can probably grab it for around $10.

Mario Tennis

I actually got those prices from the Gamestop website. Those ar the prices that they charge.

I spent about $100 dollars on my 64. I bought from seperate parties for approx:
$25 for the console, 1 controller, 1 memory card, wires and junk
$15 for both Zeldas together
$10 for Mario Kart and Super smash bros.
$40 for three controllers, Mario Party 3, tony hawk 2 and 3, and goldeneye
$15 for expansion pak, 2 memory/rumble paks

free from friend: Mario 64, Perfect Dark, Donkey Kong 64, Road Rash, Ken Griffy baseball, and Harvest Moon.

I really like goldeneye and the zelda games the most. Mario games are a must have, and harvest moon was pretty good.
I also bought glover, but it was lame and i returned it along with mario party 2.

outside of a flea market, I don't think you'd get better prices than that. Especially getting that Harvest Moon for free. I know several people that would pay $40 for it.

You seem to have gotten pretty much the essential titles for the N64. I really can't recommend any others than the ones I already have. Conker's Bad Fur Day is about the only other one I can think of.

Have fun with your new system.

how much? none of the conker's ROMs that i have work. i've always wanted to play it i heard it was really good

yeah, the prices for N64 were a little redic. N64 was the first (well first nintendo console anyway) to sell without a game in the origional packaging. and i even remember purchasing TUROK for the low, low price of $79.99. y-i-k-e-s

i liked the cartridge format a lot more than disc media... you coudl save to it so easily. no need to buy a memory card. and now xbox has a hard drive. that's great. but i can't use MY halo character against joe blow's halo character. or MY tiger woods guy against joe blow's tiger woods guy. perfect dark used N64's memory card capabilities ..uh..perfectly.. because out of my friends who owned the game, we all had a memory card and you just brought yoru controller and could use your guy

me likey

Yeah, Halo characters can be tranfered via memory cards, but its easier to make a new profile on your friends xbox.
The 64 mem card was a pretty good innovation, but i also liked the cartridge save pioneered by the NES Zelda.

Its a tough call between cartridge and disk formats. Both have their ups and downs. I just cant decide which i like better.

Aside from HDD saving, I prefer the save style of the Saturn. Inside the system was an easily accessible CR2032 battery that stored saves and could easily be replaced. This is the same battery in games like Zelda that allowed for saving, but when the battery went bad, you were stuck with a game that couldn't save unless you took the cartridge apart and replaced it.

cartridge saving is (on the most part) much faster than flash memory saving too. xbox is pretty quick, but the PS2 is rediculous slow accessing that stupid memory card. i remember playing tiger woods 2003 over the summer and the only real stand out memory of that game was how big of a pain in the ass it was to save and load the game. 2005 on the xbox is pretty quick though, and i haven't really noticed a nintendo game that has a loading time whatsoever. which i'm glad that's really the one thing i didn't want to put up with on the 'cube is loading times

Absolutely. I think the SNES had a 3.8mm bit on the carts (can't check, since I my SNES collection is at hoe). The problem is, if you're a normal person, you don't have these laying around. Jason over at http://www.electricquarter.com sells these, but he said his stock was low a couple weeks ago, so I imagine he is sold out by now.

If you are impatient/brave, you can try using a typical flathead screwdriver, but that's alot of work.

Anyways, the procedure is as follows:

Unscrew the bits on the back of the cart
Pry the battery off with flathead
place new battery in (you can solder it or use electrical tape)
put cart back together
play game

Pretty simple, but a hassle nonetheless.

I think the standard life of a cr2032 is pegged at about 5 years. Not that that means anything...I've got a couple of Zelda carts still going strong on their first battery after about 13 years. Conversely, I've had battery's die in a Saturn after 2 years.

Oh Secret of Mana, now that was the game right there. I still have a save where I have every single thing maxed out, including the glitch that gives you the 9th Sword Orb for a permanent Mana Sword.

No problem. Let me know how it turns out.

I can now confirm that you need a 3.8mm bit. They are out at The Electric Quarter though, and he said they won't get them back until late october. You might want to try Ebay.
