ive bene told there are two variations of ram, and that they are NOT compatible wiht one another, this being the case how would i figure out which I have? Do I have to open up my cpu and look inside, this being the case where would it be, if not, where would it be located on my computer... thanks in advance!

Actually there are 5 main types of system ram: SDR, DDR, DDR2(very new), SoDIMM (notebook only), and RAMBUS (old and expensive). You either have SDR or DDR. I can't think of any programs that can tell you what type of ram you have but they are out there.

CPUZ or Sandra should tell you what type of RAM you have.

under installed memory it says 256 MB SDRAM, so i have SDR correct? this being case, to upgrade it do i have to buy a totally new stick or do multiple ones slide on top of each other usually?

RAM doesnt slide on top of other ram, however it slides next to other RAM if you have an open slot. Look for slots on your motherboard about 6" long that are not toward the back of your computer.

If you don't even know what type of memory you have, I suggest you have someone else pick it out for you and install it for you. Its not hard but as with anything, if you don't know what you are doing you can break things much easier.

try http://www.crucial.com 's memory selector thing. hopefully you know enough about the system to be able to do that.

there are a helluva lot of kinds of system memory, but usually only 1 or 2 for a given cpu type. so if you know what kind of cpu, thatll help too.
