wtf, why make things harder than they need to be. just install IIS from your 2003 cd. It's soooooo simple.

Actually, if you navigate to:
C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache2\conf
the httpd.conf file will teach you all you need to know. I recommend printing out the default one and just browsing it for a while.

yeah some of the stuff is pretty self explanatory. You might want to try to find a good step-by-step guide to installing Apache. it can be a bitch if you have to install it on Windows with the right PHP if you need that.

but the config file is a good read.

This is what I have done. I dual boot linux and windows for testing stuff.
So under linux I use Apache with PHP and the MySQL Modules and the MySQL server.
Under windows I run IIS with PHP added and I installed the MySQL drivers to ODBC.
Again, that is just for testing code and stuff. If I was going to run a real website under windows... apache with php. Do not use IIS. Everytime I go on to the interenet with windows I shutdown/pause the IIS service because if I leave it on people with hack the crap out of me... that is just the way it is. If PHP isn't your thing... you can install ASP for Apache. If you just want to host HTML... DON'T INSTALL EITHER OF THEM! If you are just doing simple stuff, install SimpleServer. It is a single executable that you run... point it towards a directory.. and it will host its contents. You don't have to configure anything!
You can install FTP like you can IIS. It is a windows component. Instal it and you are good to go. If I was installing this for myself, I would instal something that is more secure than ftp.. but whatever. A note if you are installing IIS... make sure you have enabled/installed the Microsoft Client. I ran into this problem after I went back and installed IIS. If you don't, IIS wont start... so if you get an error in your event log... you might check that out. Hope everything goes well.

l8r,
Brandito

I work in a hosting center with a few hundred customer servers and the number of apache servers that get hacked is equal to or greater than IIS.

In fact, IIS doesn't get compromised very often. It's usually other services that get hacked.
I'd say that out of ten servers that get hacked

4 are mail services (windows or linux)
3 are ftp service on linux
2 are database servers (almost always windows)
1 miscelaneous
