i got word today from a professor (who will remain anyonymous) that there is a committee looking to get rid of all the CLCs on campus. they claim that its too expensive to maintain them all. thing is, they still want to collect our yearly computer usage charges. what kind of BS is that? how is it that we still have to deal with increasing tutuion and other campus charges in return for less (chartwells)? i actually have my own comp, but to be fair to other students that dont, its just not right. however accurate my professor is, or when/even if this goes into effect i dont know. definitely keep a heads up on this. im sure there's other crappy ideas that UMR has in effect similar to this as well.

I kinda find it hard to believe they would want to eliminate all the CLC's on campus. Either way, that's one of the most retarded ideas i've ever heard. They're never going to remove all the CLC's plain and simple (but if they ever do, heads will roll  )

EDIT:
OH! that! yeah, they're all retarded, dont listen to them.

One plan that I have heard is that UMR will provide each student with a computer instead of the CLCs.

UMR has such great, I mean fucking awesome CLC’s compared to other schools, and yet the elimination has already begun in many buildings. I don t know if they are getting rid of all the clc’s but in some buildings it’s a lame excuse to have more classroom or office space.

Several of the CLCs were closed in McNutt already and now there is only one room for everybody who lost theirs. The room we're in now is much shittier than the last one and feels way too cramped. That, and now I have to share a lab with those dirty Mets hehe

Too bad UMR pissed away so much money on flowerbeds, I bet that money would keep a CLC open a day or two.

I've heard Northwest Missouri State (now UM-Northwest) does that, provides each student with an in-room computer. I'd rather use my own computer. I bet the ones we would be given would be pretty crappy.

NWSU does do that. I have a good friend that goes up there, and he gets a crappy celeron notebook.

Let's say they did give everyone a crappy notebook. Would that really be so bad? How many people who really care woudln't buy their own computer anyway. You do with the CLCs now. So the difference is that you have the computer in your room as opposed to having to walk to the lab to use whatever software you needed that you couldn't pirate. There are some benefits to having labs, but having a lot fewer labs (to handle printing?) and "giving away" notebooks may not be as bad as it seems at first.

I wasn't saying that it was necessarily a bad thing. I was just stating what kind of computers they got. I'd use the notebook for a file server or something, would be rather nice actually.

The CLCs allow people to work together in a professional environment, them attempt to make sure that every student has equal access to the tools they need to succeed.
Personally I think the CLCs are one of UMR’s greatest strengths, and getting rid of them, to follow a educational experiment is a bad idea.

Not to mention that even though they'd be getting rid of the labs to cut costs, you KNOW the notebooks would be 1: mandatory, 2: something they added the price of to your tuition, 3: something they grossly overcharged us for...

Also, I assume everyone here remembers the whole stupid shit that went on with the HP calculators 3 years ago......

Did they ever offer an explanation for that?
