So I have an HP with Windows (I know I know, there's the mistake) but anyway I needed to reinstall windows becuase my log in screen got "lost." Long story short I never get the option, thanks to HP, to partition my drives. Is there anyway I can partition it after installing windows.
Sorry if thats not the clearest statement, maybe I'll fix it later.
if you plan on doing a fresh install of windows, partition your drive before you install windows. the windows install will give you the option of which partition to install to, delete the existing partion(s) and create a new one the size you want. once windows is installed you can manipulate the left over space.
if you are trying to repartition your drive after windows is installed us a program like Partition Magic.

Last I checked Partition Magic 6 let you resize / modify partitions without reformatting.
Your OS must remain on the partition first in line to the MBR, but other than that, if you want to delete a recovery partition or create a new one from left over disk space, give it a try.

Mmmm...Partition Magic. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But it's always an adventure!

So true, so true. I'm at like 40/60 success rate with it. It seems to not like SATA drives though. After trying to use it on them, it bombed, and now when I boot I get "invalid boot.ini", then it proceeds to tell me it will boot from C:windows instead. Windows still loads, which I'm grateful for, but I think I'm done with partition magic.

My friend here has an HP with XP on it... and unfortunately, their stupid rescue system (which you get to by holding F10 when you turn the computer on) doesn't allow resizing either. All I can tell you is to use partition magic, and I haven't had any troubles with it.
