67 points on that scale, and you could emigrate to Canada today.

This came up in a recent argument I was having, and with all the bitching and moaning I've heard about our government lately, and the cynicism about the hopes for change in our future, I figured this might be relevant for others

Secondary school is the equivalent of our high school, in the table.

Stupid question on that note, actually: If the draft were coming up, and I broke my leg, would I still be eligible for it? 'Cause otherwise, if it comes up, I'll just take a crowbar to myself. Don't get me wrong: if there'd been a draft after 9/11 (Not that it would have been necessary!) I woulda been fine and dandy with going to Afghanistan--but this bullshit with Iraq is another matter....I'm sure as hell not risking my life for a war I don't believe in (anymore).

Just so everyone knows....i wouldn't skip the draft by going to Canada, injuring myself, or otherwise. I may not agree with the current war....but if asked upon to fight i would. Hopefully if there was a draft, by the time it came along i might have enough education not to get stuck in infintary (sp?), assuming thats how assignments go, although i really have no clue.

Well luke, I don't question your courage, but is it really honorable to go and fight a war you don't believe in? Would you shoot someone you didn't think was a threat to our country OR deserved to die, just because Bush told you to?

It takes an even greater sense of honor to fight for your country, if called to do so, when you don't agree with it. It comes down to respect for your country, which transcends politics and should have little to do with the man at the helm. If you run and hide to avoid fighting because of politics, you're a coward looking for an excuse.

Hopefully i wouldn't get put in a combat position, or maybe they would have programs for consienscious (sp?) objectors. With our modern military technology the chance of getting killed is far less than in Vietnam or either of the World Wars. Or then again, i might seek some kind of legal defferment, like college, joining the Peace Corps, ect. Who knows. Thousands of other men of my age faced the same dillema in the 60's and 70's too.

First off, a conscientous objector is someone who is against the use and owning of any gun, so I don't think you qualify (if I recall that you shoot guns regularly)

Also, if you were loyal to your family, and they told you to go kill your best friend, would you? (Assume it's legal in this instance) I sure wouldn't, unless there was a darn good reason for it. I'm not going to kill someone who doesn't deserve it because one person at the top of our government asked me to.

Aha! But that's where the tequila comes in.

But, but, but! What if they found out your friend was really an evil android from the future sent back in time to detonate a nuclear device thus killing any chance you had of producing the offspring that will one day rid the world of their nefarious kind?

Patrick, so it's even MORE honorable if you believe the people you're fighting are basically innocents defending their homes? How does THAT work out?
